Data Classification

Highly sensitive data are of personal nature that permit the identity of an individual be directly established regardless of whether the individual is a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, visitor to the U.S., an employee, a student, or a contractor to the College.  Sensitive data are also of personal nature permitting the identity of an individual be indirectly inferred, especially when pieces of information are applied in combination to formulate a sure target.

Exposure of both highly sensitive and sensitive data could lead to identity theft, disclosure of personal health and financial information causing substantial harm, embarrassment, inconvenience, or unfairness to an individual.  Data are obligated by laws or contract to be protected obviously by nature of confidentiality, if released, would violate applicable law and present legal liability to the College.

Augustana College recognizes the importance of protecting information of all our constituents in compliance with legal requirements, such as Family Educational Rights and Privacy (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).  Augustana College is committed to safeguarding information responsibly in our gathering, storing and processing of data.  Below is a table that contains some common data being gathered, stored and processed throughout the many offices and departments on campus.  The list is not all-inclusive in consideration of the ever-growing availability of new data gathered in compliance to applicable laws or for collegiate reporting purposes.
