Student employment eligibility and options
Augustana offers several types of student employment. Eligibility, funding, qualifications, and work schedules vary by position. Students must complete all required employment and payroll steps before beginning work.
Who may work?
All degree-seeking students enrolled at Augustana College at least half-time (6 credits) are eligible to apply for student employment. Employment is contingent upon maintaining this enrollment status.
Current Augustana students who meet the eligibility requirements listed in a position may apply for student employment. Some positions are limited to students with Federal Work-Study eligibility, while others are open to all eligible students.
International students must also meet federal immigration and employment requirements before beginning work.
What types of positions are available?
On-Campus Employment
On-campus positions are supervised by an Augustana department and paid through the college. Responsibilities, qualifications, schedules, and funding sources vary by position.
Flexible Employment Program
The Flexible Employment Program provides short-term or flexible work opportunities based on campus needs. Contact fep@augustana.edu with questions about the program.
Off-Campus Community-Based Federal Work-Study
Students with Federal Work-Study eligibility may apply for approved positions with participating nonprofit community partners. Augustana coordinates the position posting, hiring, payroll, and administrative processes.
Community organizations interested in exploring a partnership should contact Student Employment at studentemployment@augustana.edu.
What is Federal Work-Study?
Federal Work-Study is a need-based financial aid program that allows eligible students to earn money through approved student employment.
The Office of Financial Aid determines eligibility. Students can review their financial aid information to determine whether they have received a Federal Work-Study award. Questions about eligibility or awards should be directed to financialaid@augustana.edu.
Federal Work-Study funds are earned through employment. The award is not automatically applied to a student’s tuition or account balance.
Common Questions
Is a student employment position guaranteed?
No. A Federal Work-Study award does not guarantee employment. Students must search for available positions, submit the required application materials, and be selected by a hiring department.
The availability of positions varies throughout the academic year. Students are not guaranteed a specific position, number of work hours, or amount of earnings.
Can students without Federal Work-Study work?
Yes. Students who do not have Federal Work-Study may apply for positions open to the general student population. Available positions and eligibility requirements vary.
Students should review each position in Augie Works carefully before applying.
Can international students work?
International students may generally apply for eligible on-campus positions, but they must comply with federal immigration and employment requirements.
Before beginning work, international students must:
- Confirm that they are eligible for employment.
- Complete the required employment verification process.
- Complete the international student hiring and payroll requirements.
- Follow all federal restrictions governing student employment and work hours.
International students should follow the international student instructions under Prepare to Work: Employment Verification and Payroll Setup and contact the appropriate campus office with questions about employment authorization.
Can students hold multiple positions?
Students may hold more than one student employment position if they remain eligible and can meet the expectations of each position.
Work hours from all Augustana positions are combined when determining a student’s total weekly hours. Students are responsible for:
- Informing supervisors about their other campus positions.
- Coordinating schedules to prevent conflicts.
- Staying within applicable work-hour limits.
- Accurately recording time for each position.
- Maintaining academic responsibilities and satisfactory job performance.
Having multiple positions does not increase a student’s Federal Work-Study award or guarantee additional work hours.
