Student employee workplace expectations
Student employment is an opportunity to contribute to the Augustana community, build professional skills, and prepare for future employment. The following recommendations can help student employees succeed in their positions.
Individual departments and positions may have additional requirements related to scheduling, communication, attire, safety, confidentiality, technology, and job duties. Supervisors should review department-specific expectations during onboarding. Students should ask their supervisor whenever an expectation is unclear.
This guidance supplements, but does not replace, applicable Augustana College policies or requirements.
Be Dependable
- Arrive on time and be prepared to begin working at the start of your shift.
- Follow the schedule established with your supervisor.
- Remain engaged in your responsibilities throughout the shift.
- Notify your supervisor promptly if you will be absent or late.
- Request planned time away as early as possible.
- Discuss schedule changes before assuming they are approved.
Communicate Professionally
- Ask questions when instructions or priorities are unclear.
- Respond to work-related messages in a timely manner.
- Let your supervisor know when you complete an assignment or need additional work.
- Communicate concerns early so your supervisor can help.
- Treat students, employees, visitors, and community members respectfully.
Record Your Time Accurately
- Record all hours actually worked in TimesheetX.
- Use the correct designation for each position.
- Include required training, orientation, and meetings.
- Review your entries before submitting your timesheet.
- Report errors or missing time to your supervisor promptly.
- Never record time for another employee or ask someone to record time for you.
- Do not perform work without recording the time.
Make Productive Use of Work Time
- Focus on assigned responsibilities while being paid.
- Ask for additional work when assignments are complete.
- Limit personal calls, messaging, social media, and other personal activities.
- Complete homework during work only when your supervisor has specifically permitted it.
- Use earbuds or headphones only when permitted and when they do not interfere with safety, communication, or service.
Protect Confidential Information
- Access only the records and systems needed for your job.
- Do not discuss private work information with friends, family members, or unauthorized individuals.
- Protect passwords and account information.
- Keep paper and electronic records secure.
- Do not photograph, download, or share confidential information without permission.
- Report a suspected privacy or security concern immediately.
Use College Property Responsibly
- Use equipment, systems, supplies, and facilities only as authorized.
- Follow safety and operating instructions.
- Report damaged, missing, or malfunctioning equipment.
- Return keys, identification, equipment, and other property when requested or when employment ends.
Present Yourself Appropriately
- Follow attire, identification, footwear, and safety requirements established for your position.
- Wear clothing that allows you to perform your responsibilities safely.
- Ask your supervisor if you are uncertain about position-specific expectations.
- Contact your supervisor, Student Employment, or the appropriate college office if you need an adjustment related to a protected circumstance.
Seek Feedback and Build Skills
- Participate actively in training.
- Ask for feedback on your performance.
- Respond constructively to coaching.
- Identify skills you are developing through your work.
- Discuss career goals with your supervisor when appropriate.
- Reflect on examples of communication, teamwork, problem-solving, reliability, and leadership that you can use in future applications and interviews.
Leave a Position Professionally
- Tell your supervisor as soon as possible if you need to resign.
Provide written notice and as much transition time as circumstances allow. - Clearly communicate your final workday.
- Complete or transfer unfinished work.
- Submit all outstanding time.
- Return college property.
- Continue protecting confidential information after employment ends.
