Academic support during distance learning

The Office of Disability Services (ODS), Reading/Writing Center, and Student Success Services will continue to provide academic support services to our students online.

Office of Disability Services

Students needing accommodations will continue to receive accommodations. We recognize that some flexibility and creativity must be exercised to ensure that students are getting support during distance learning. Please refer to the email that was sent out from ODS on March 19.

For answers to questions about registering with the Office of Disability Services, you can find more information here.

Please contact Kam Williams Director of Disability Services for any questions.

Reading/Writing Center

Open for online tutoring appointments beginning Wednesday, April 1, at 10 a.m. (Should you need assistance between March 30-31, please contact Lucas Street.) Our hours are the same: M-Th 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.; F 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; Sun 7-9 p.m. (All times CST.)

Tutorials will be conducted via Google Meet video chat and Google Docs. Laptops or desktop computers will work best for this, as you’ll need to have two windows open simultaneously (one for the video chat, one for a Google Doc of your paper). Peer tutor appointments are increasing from 40 to 60 minutes to account for any technical difficulties that may occur.

• Sign up via Starfish as you normally would.
• At your appointment’s start time, the tutor will send you a link to the Google Meet session.

Faculty tutor appointments are also available via Google Meet and will increase from 30 to 40 minutes. Contact any of our three faculty tutors (Jacob Romaniello, Susie Méndez, or Lucas Street) to inquire about their availability.

If you don’t have a reliable computer or internet connection, we can accommodate a limited number of non-video appointments. To inquire about availability, contact Lucas Street.

Student Success Services

We will continue to offer subject tutoring, study skills coaching, and Well-Being Labs and Civil Discourse Series online.

Study Skills Coaching

Yen Dao will honor all appointments previously scheduled and encourage students to set up an appointment for study skills coaching. Study skills coaching will be provided remotely via Google Meet or phone call. Students wanting to schedule a one-on-one appointment must email yendao@augustana.edu to set up an appointment. A google calendar invitation with the link to Google Meet will be provided to allow students to join the video chat conversation..

Well-Being Labs and Civil Discourse Series

While some of our events have been cancelled, we will do our best to offer as many of these sessions as possible in the near future. More information will be sent out at a later date.

Individual and Drop-in Subject Tutoring

We will offer online individual and drop-in tutoring to students starting Tuesday, March 31 via Google Meet. If tutee or tutor does not have access to the technology to get online tutoring, tutoring over the phone is also an option.

Online tutoring will present new challenges for us; therefore, we will be asking all students who wish to participate in drop-in tutoring or review sessions to RSVP ahead of time to give our tutors adequate time to prepare. Students are encouraged to log into Google Meet early and be patient with our tutors as they navigate this new tutoring platform. We will extend individual tutoring from 2 hours per week per student to 2.5 hours per week per student and an additional 15 minutes for drop-in tutoring/review sessions per session to allow time for tutors to answer questions or to troubleshoot.

An email will be sent out to all students on Monday, March 30 with links to RSVP for a spot in review sessions/drop-in tutoring. This is a free service that is open and available to all students enrolled in a specific course or subject.

Students earning a C or below in a course and have met all departmental requirements will also receive free individual tutoring online. Students who haven’t submitted an official tutoring request must do so via Starfish. The instructions are listed below:

To request individual tutoring, log into Starfish.

1. In the Starfish menu, click on the "Request Help" icon.

2. Select "I need individual tutoring help" from the drop-down menu.

3. Enter the course you need help with and a short description of what kind of help you might need.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have questions or concerns.
