Grants

Grants generally are awarded based on financial need and, like scholarships, are not repaid. Eligibility for most grants is based on information provided on the FAFSA and/or other institutional financial aid forms. Grants come from several sources, including the federal government, some states, the college and organizations.

Grants noted below are the most common available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. To apply for most grants you must complete the FAFSA on a yearly basis.

Institutional grants

Institutional grants require full-time enrollment.

Augustana Grant — up to $27,000. Awarded to students with demonstrated financial need as determined by filing the FAFSA. The Augustana Grant amount may change from one year to another if your Student Aid Index (SAI) changes.

Augustana College endowed and annual awards — amounts vary depending on available funds. Students automatically are considered for endowed and annual awards, which are awarded to returning students with demonstrated financial need. A limited number of awards are not based on financial need and are made upon recommendation from academic departments.

These donor-funded awards are provided by generous alumni and supporters of Augustana. The award amount may change from year to year if you switch majors or if your Student Aid Index (SAI) changes.

Federal grants

Federal grants are available to both full-time and part-time students.

Pell Grant, up to $7,395 for 2026-27.

Awarded to students who show exceptional financial need as determined by the FAFSA. The FAFSA must be filed on a yearly basis and the amount may change from year to year if your Student Aid Index (SAI) changes.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), $100 to $4,000

Awarded to students who show exceptional financial need as determined by the FAFSA. Priority awarding will be given to those who are eligible for a Pell Grant. Most students at Augustana will receive a $500 FSEOG award.

TEACH Grant — up to $4,000. Awarded to second-year students majoring in education, particularly students pursuing teaching majors in science, math, and foreign languages. Upon graduation, student must teach full-time in a high-need field that serves low-income students for at least four academic years within an eight-year period. Students must complete a FAFSA, though demonstrated financial need is not a requirement. (Learn more about the TEACH Grant).

State grants

State grants are available to both full-time and part-time students.

Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant — up to $8,064 for 2026-27. Awarded to Illinois residents who attend an approved institution in Illinois and who meet the need requirements set by the state of Illinois.

To be considered for a MAP Grant, submit the FAFSA before the deadline, announced by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC).

Additional information issued by ISAC:

You may be eligible for a State of Illinois MAP grant.

Because you completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid, you are also considered for financial aid from the State of Illinois. You may qualify for a State of Illinois MAP grant—financial aid from the State of Illinois that is based on financial need and does not have to be repaid. If you are eligible:

  • Your financial aid offer from the school includes an estimated amount listed as IL MAP (estimated).
  • The amount listed is an estimate. The final amount may change depending on how much funding the state provides this year, as well as the number of hours you’re enrolled and your other sources of aid.
  • MAP grant awards may be received for up to about 4½ years of full-time college.
  • You can learn more about the State of Illinois MAP grant and check how many credit hours you have used on the Illinois Student Assistance Commission website: isac.org/mapgrant.

You may also qualify for help with dependent care expenses and food costs.

  • Ask your financial aid office if you would benefit from the federal dependent care allowance.
  • Call the Illinois Hunger Coalition Hotline at 800-359-2163 or visit the website at ilhunger.org for information about food assistance.
  • Contact the Illinois Department of Human Services at 800-843-6154 or visit the website dhs.state.il.us for information about the Child Care Assistance Program and/or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

If an IL MAP (estimated) is not included in your award letter, you are not eligible for the grant at Augustana College.

Other state grant programs — amounts vary. A limited number of states offer state funds that can be used at a non-state institution if you meet eligibility requirements set by that state. If you live outside of Illinois, check with the higher education agency in your home state to learn if state funds can be used at Augustana College in Illinois.
