Find and apply for student employment
Augustana students use Augie Works to search and apply for student employment positions. New opportunities may be posted throughout the year, so students are encouraged to check regularly and apply for positions that match their interests, qualifications, and availability.
Student employment is not guaranteed. Students must search for positions, complete the application process, and be selected by the hiring department.
Use your Augustana credentials to log in to Augie Works.
Once logged in, you can use JobX to:
- Search for student employment positions
- Review position descriptions
- Apply for available jobs
- Set up JobMail notifications
- Monitor submitted applications
- Review your hiring status
- Access employment-related information
Detailed screen-by-screen instructions are available in Augie Works System Help.
Search for Positions
Use the JobX search tools to explore available positions.
New positions may be posted at different times throughout the year. More positions are often available before the beginning of an academic term, but departments may post openings whenever a need arises.
If you do not see a suitable position, check Augie Works again later and consider setting up JobMail notifications.
Set Up JobMail
JobMail sends notifications about potential job matches based on the interests or criteria you select.
A JobMail subscription can help you learn about new opportunities without repeating the same search every day.
A JobMail notification does not guarantee that you are eligible for the position or will be selected. Always review the complete posting.
Review the Job Posting
Read the entire posting before applying.
Consider whether the schedule is compatible with your classes and other commitments. Students may not work during scheduled classes.
If you hold more than one Augustana position, hours worked across all positions count toward the same weekly limit.

Prepare & Submit Your Application
JobX uses a standard application to make it easier to apply for multiple positions. Some departments may also ask job-specific questions or request additional materials.
Before submitting your application:
- Answer every required question
- Follow the instructions in the posting
- Tailor your responses to the specific position
- Check spelling, grammar, and accuracy
- Confirm that your availability is current
- Review uploaded documents
- Make sure your application explains why you are interested and qualified
Incomplete applications may delay review or make it difficult for the supervisor to evaluate your candidacy.
Submitting an application does not guarantee an interview or job offer.
You may apply for more than one position. If you receive an offer, consider your schedule and total work hours before accepting another position.
Monitor Your Applications
Use the JobX My Dashboard feature to monitor your applications and employment activity.
Continue monitoring your Augustana email as well. Supervisors and Student Employment may contact you by email or through Augie Works.
Respond promptly when a department requests additional information or invites you to interview.
If a position is no longer listed, check your dashboard before assuming that your application has been removed. The department may have closed the posting while reviewing candidates.
Prepare for an Interview
A supervisor may contact selected applicants for an interview.
Before the interview:
- Review the job posting again.
- Learn about the department.
- Be prepared to explain why the position interests you.
- Identify examples of relevant skills or experience.
- Think about your class schedule and availability.
- Prepare questions about the position.
- Confirm the date, time, location, and interview format.
- Notify the interviewer promptly if you need to reschedule.
- Arrive or log in on time.
Relevant experience may come from:
- Previous employment
- Volunteer work
- Student organizations
- Athletics
- Coursework
- Class projects
- Leadership roles
- Community involvement
- Personal responsibilities
You do not need to have held a formal job to demonstrate communication, teamwork, dependability, organization, problem-solving, or other workplace skills.
During the Interview
Treat a student employment interview as a professional conversation.
During the interview:
- Introduce yourself professionally.
- Listen carefully to each question.
- Answer honestly and completely.
- Use specific examples when possible.
- Ask for clarification if a question is unclear.
- Be accurate about your availability.
- Explain how the position relates to your interests or goals.
- Ask questions about duties, training, supervision, scheduling, and expectations.
- Thank the interviewer for their time.
Do not claim availability that you cannot maintain. An accurate schedule helps the supervisor determine whether the position is a good match.
After the Interview
After the interview:
- Send a brief thank-you message when appropriate.
- Continue monitoring your Augustana email and JobX dashboard.
- Respond promptly to follow-up questions.
- Provide references or other information if requested.
- Continue applying for other positions while waiting for a decision.
Hiring timelines vary by department. Some supervisors review applications as they arrive, while others wait until the posting deadline.
Receiving an Offer
If you are selected, the supervisor will contact you with an offer or additional hiring instructions.
Ask questions if any part of the offer is unclear.
A proposed start date is not authorization to begin working. The hiring process and employment-verification requirements must be completed first.
Responding to an Offer
Respond by the deadline provided by the supervisor.
If you accept
- Clearly state that you are accepting the position.
- Confirm the position and proposed start date.
- Complete any requested action in Augie Works.
- Review the employment-verification and payroll requirements.
- Monitor your Augustana email for instructions.
- Wait for confirmation before beginning work.
If you need time to decide
Ask the supervisor whether a short extension is available. Explain when you will provide a decision.
If you decline
Thank the supervisor and clearly state that you are declining the offer. Prompt communication allows the department to contact another candidate.
Do not accept multiple positions if the combined schedules or hours will prevent you from meeting the expectations of each job.
If you are not selected
Not being selected does not mean that you are unqualified for all student employment. Departments may receive many applications or need a student with a particular schedule or skill.
If you are not selected:
- Continue searching in Augie Works.
- Set up or revise JobMail notifications.
- Review your application materials.
- Apply to multiple appropriate positions.
- Consider asking whether the supervisor can offer general feedback.
- Meet with Career Development & Vocation for resume or interview support.
- Continue checking for openings throughout the year.
Students with Federal Work-Study eligibility are not guaranteed a position and must continue searching and applying until selected.
After You Are Selected
Once you accept an offer, your supervisor completes the applicable hiring process through JobX.
You must then complete all required employment-verification and payroll steps. You may not begin working until Augustana confirms that you are authorized to start.
