Business for Humanity

B.Human. The future of business is human.

""

Business for Humanity is a selective interdisciplinary program for Augustana students who want to explore where business can take them, and what they want their work to mean.

B.Human gives you a place to explore what matters to you, see how your different interests fit together, and learn from people who have already navigated some of the decisions ahead of you.

About the program

As a B.Human fellow, you will:

  • Combine your interests. Connect business with another field you care about and discover career possibilities, new perspectives and questions you may not have considered.
  • Learn from lived experiences, not just résumés. Get to know alumni and community leaders through conversations that go deeper than traditional networking. Hear how careers really unfold, including changes in direction, difficult decisions and unexpected opportunities.
  • Explore meaningful work. Think seriously about what you want from a career and what place you want work to hold in your life.
  • Find your people. Develop your ideas alongside students whose interests and aspirations may be very different from your own.
  • Gather around big questions. Participate in B.Human dinners and conversations about work, business, society, purpose and the common good.

Key themes

Career and purpose

What makes work meaningful? What kind of career fits the life you hope to build?

B.Human creates space to explore your professional ambitions and think about the place you want work to hold in your life.

Business in context

Business decisions affect people, organizations and communities.

Studying business along with a field outside of business helps you see problems and possibilities from more than one perspective, expands your understanding, and strengthens your sense of judgment for decisions in your profession.

Relationships and the common good

What responsibilities come with the work you hope to do?

Through conversations with peers, alumni and community leaders, you will explore how professional choices affect others, and what it means to contribute through your work.

The Augustana advantage

At Augustana, you do not have to choose between preparation for your business profession and other subjects that are important to you.

B.Human gives you a structured way to bring those interests together. Your study outside business develops a deeper understanding of organizations, people, and issues that will inform the decisions you may one day be responsible for making .

Eligibility

B.Human is designed for students who are curious about business and the larger questions surrounding work, leadership and life. Applicants pursue both a business program and a non-business program.

The business program may be:

The non-business program can be any major or minor outside of the business fields. See all areas of study for ideas.

You do not need to have your entire career or academic path figured out. An intention to declare is sufficient when applying. However, students selected for B.Human must confirm enrollment in both a business program and a non-business program to remain in the program.

How to apply

Students apply during their time at Augustana and may apply with the intention to declare the required business and non-business programs.

Applications for the next B.Human cohort open in Spring 2027.

Program support

Business for Humanity is supported by the Council of Independent Colleges and Lilly Endowment Inc. through a NetVUE Vocation across the Academy Grant. The grant supports Augustana's work helping students explore the intersection of business, vocation and the common good.

See B.Human in action

B.Human dinners bring students, faculty, alumni and community leaders together to talk about questions that rarely have simple answers: Why do we work? What makes a career meaningful? How do we navigate competing responsibilities? What do businesses owe their communities?

These questions become conversations during dinner, and students make connections they can take with them for the future.
