Abstract:    
Marie Westerberg Vader (1893-1994) was the daughter of Swedish immigrants and attended Iowa Lutheran Hospital’s Nurses Training School in Des Moines, Iowa from 1915 to 1917. Collection includes her remembrances of her time there and a brief history of the hospital.

CONTENT AND STRUCTURE

Administrative/Biographical History:    
Marie Westerberg was born in Emerson, Nebraska, on April 27, 1893. Her parents had immigrated to the U.S. from Sweden in the early 1880s. They lived on an Indian reservation near Sioux City, Iowa, for three years and then moved to a farm in Laurel, Nebraska. Before becoming a nurse, Marie attended Grand College, worked for the Swedish language newspaper Iowa Posten in Des Moines, Iowa, and as a file clerk and telephone operator.

She trained as a nurse from 1915 to 1918, worked as a staff nurse at Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) from 1923 to 1925 and as an industrial nurse for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company from 1926 to 1933. During the depression, she took a job as an agent for a telephone company. Marie married Paul Vader in 1944. She died in 1994.

Scope and Content:    
Collection contains Marie Westerberg Vader’s historical sketches of Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Nurses’ Training School in Des Moines, Iowa from 1913 to 1918.  Her reminiscences of the training school concentrate on the first and second graduating classes and living and working conditions at the hospital.
