Abstract:         
Charles August Johnson was born in Sweden in 1842 and came to the United States in 1868. Johnson became interest in ornithology after hearing and seeing tropical birds during his early seaman years abroad. He carved and painted hundreds of realistic birds from wood. The collection contains three pages of typewriting biographical notes from various sources titled “Writeups Concerning Mr. Charles August Johnson, Bird Carver: Collection Given Augustana Historical Society.”

Collection likely originally received by the Augustana College library and transferred to the Swenson Center. Received by Kermit Westerberg on January 27, 1984. Accession number T-xx62.

Notes: 
Formerly cataloged in Immig. 929.2 C337 e under Cervin, Olof. Also formerly MSS P:150. Collection was previously, erroneously, titled “Clarence August Johnson papers.”

Papers note that wood carvings were gifted to the Augustana Historical Society. There is no evidence of the carvings in the collection as of July 2020.

CONTENT AND STRUCTURE

Administrative/Biographical History:  
Charles August Johnson was born in Vadstena, Östergötland, Sweden on February 19, 1842. In his early years he was a mariner, traveled widely as a seaman. He came to the United States in 1868, first to Titusville, Pennsylvania where he married Carolina Wilhelmina Hultgren on September 17, 1872. They had a daughter, Anna W. Johnson. They then moved to Pullman, Illinois where he worked for the Pullman Car Company until his retirement in 1914.

Johnson became interest in ornithology after hearing and seeing tropical birds during his seaman years. He carved and painted hundreds of realistic birds from wood.

Johnson died August 5, 1926.

Scope and Content:     
Three pages of typewriting biographical notes from various sources titled “Writeups Concerning Mr. Charles August Johnson, Bird Carver: Collection Given Augustana Historical Society.” The notes are undated and unsigned. The collection does not seem to be held by the Augustana Historical Society as of July 2020.
