CONTENT AND STRUCTURE

Administrative/Biographical History:
The Swedish Women’s Educational Association International, Inc. is a global non-profit organization for Swedish speaking women who live and have lived outside Sweden. SWEA was founded in Los Angeles in 1979 by Agneta Nilsson. The mission of the organization is to promote Swedish culture, the use of the Swedish language, to facilitate personal and professional contacts, and to establish networks for its members across the world. In 2003, SWEA had approximately 8,000 members in 76 local chapters in 34 countries. As of 2018, SWEA has approximately 7,000 members in over 70 chapters in over 30 countries.

SWEA arranges a variety of activities at both the international and local levels. On the international level most notably is the selection of the “Swedish Woman of the Year.” Previous recipients include, among others, Queen Silvia in recognition of her involvement with the World Childhood Foundation, and Maria Nyström Reuterswärd for her work with NASA. Two scholarships at the doctorate level are also presented on an annual basis at the annual summer dinner in Stockholm. One stipend is awarded for studies in the Swedish language, literature or area studies and the other is awarded in intercultural studies.

SWEA International publishes a biannual magazine that is distributed to all members, as well as companies with Swedish connections, universities, and embassies.

SWEA offers all its members and families life, accident, and medical insurance and special support or advice when returning to Sweden from an extended stay abroad. SWEA is also active in the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, which is an organization in Sweden that represents the private business sector.

The local chapters support various projects with Swedish connections such as performances of Swedish artists, exhibits, lectures, and seminars. Swedish Christmas, Lucia, and midsummer celebrations are other important events sponsored at the local level. These events are attended by both members and people from the local communities with an interest in Swedish culture. Each chapter publishes their own newsletter and many maintain their own websites.

To become a member of SWEA you must be a woman and at least 18 years of age, speak Swedish, be willing to promote the ideas of the organization, be of good character, and have permanent residence within the geographic area of a local chapter. If seeking membership in a Swedish chapter you must have lived abroad for at least 12 months.

Scope and Content:
The collection includes minutes from meetings held by SWEA International and local chapters, financial statements, newsletters, and some correspondence.

I. SWEA International individual chapters (1980-1999 and undated) includes meeting minutes, financial statements, membership lists, correspondence, event announcements and more from SWEA chapters around the world. Arranged alphabetically by name of chapter location. Includes information from the following chapters:

United States: Arizona, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Orange County, Philadelphia, Raleigh, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Seattle, and South Florida.

Also includes some financial statements, press information, and correspondence. All folders contain materials in both Swedish and English unless otherwise noted.

III. Agneta Nilsson papers (1979-2004 and undated) includes records from the founder of SWEA. Of note is correspondence and information on the reorganization of SWEA International in 2001, the Christmas Fair in 1999, and information specific to SWEA Los Angeles, the first SWEA Chapter established by Agneta Nilsson in 1979. Also includes information on governance and elections, SWEA International meetings and committees, regional meetings and individual chapter information.
