Why Augustana?
I was drawn to the liberal arts curriculum and the opportunity to create close relationships with faculty. When I visited Augustana, it felt like home, and my decision became clear.
Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?
I truly believe that I’m a different person from when I started. Before Augustana, I had a plan for myself and knew what I wanted to gain from my time here, but my experiences filled in the blanks and guided me through new academic interests. Augustana has shaped me holistically beyond what I had expected.
Who helped you get to where you are now?
First and foremost, thank you Nadine, Tala and Jood for being the best siblings I could ask for. I wouldn’t be half the person I am today without you. Also my parents for their support; the FFC and all the friends I’ve made here.
The psychology department became my academic home. I’m deeply grateful for my ABCD Lab members, Kara Meyer and Dr. Corts.
Thank you Dr. Nordling for introducing me to my love of developmental science and embodying everything it means to be a mentor. You have a way of making everything feel like it will be okay. Thank you Dr. Lorenz for fostering my curiosity and being a constant support. Your deep compassion and unwavering encouragement have shaped who I’ve become.
Thank you both for always opening your doors to my hundreds of questions. You have pushed me to reach my fullest potential and have never stopped believing in me. It is because of you that I am confident in my future in academia.
Peak experience?
I don’t think I can pick just one. Any time I got to spend with my friends, my first in-person participant, lecturing this past summer, and conducting my independent research project are all peak experiences.
What surprised you?
The opportunities I would have and just how close I would become with my mentors.
How did you use your Augie Choice?
I used it to fund my honors thesis in psychology.
What will you miss the most?
The community I’ve built here. I am incredibly grateful for the friends I’ve made and the mentors who have guided me. I will miss seeing them every day and knowing I have them in my corner.
Advice for the Class of 2030?
Treat everything like a learning opportunity, no matter how small the lesson may seem. Trust the process and try to approach experiences with an open mind. Ask lots of questions and ask for what you want, even when it’s scary. Finally, make time for the things that matter and always put your well-being first.
"Mia is a rock star! Her curiosity and passion have shown through her time at Augustana, and it is incredible to see all she has accomplished. This year, she executed an exquisite honors project on parent-child interaction and simultaneously participated in two other research projects, all while excelling in her classes and holding multiple leadership roles on campus. I have cherished my time as her mentor and can’t wait to see what her future holds — the possibilities are truly limitless!"
