Why Augustana?
I chose Augustana because it allowed me to pursue multiple passions of mine. Coming into college, I knew I loved math and music and wanted the opportunity to explore both.
Augustana not only made it possible for me to pursue the double major I'd originally planned, but also gave me the opportunity to take on a triple major, all while graduating in four years.
I've especially enjoyed my experiences in music at Augustana and am grateful for the many wonderful performance opportunities I've had.
Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?
Yes and no. I knew I wanted to study math and stay involved in music, but I did not anticipate being as involved in both the math/computer science and music departments as I've become. I certainly didn't expect to leave with a computer science major and to be pursuing a Ph.D. in the field at a top research institution.
I'm incredibly grateful for the experiences and opportunities I've had throughout college, and for the ways they've shaped me into the person I am today.
Who helped you get to where you are now?
There are many people who have had a strong and positive impact on me throughout my time at Augustana, including my family, friends and professors.
My advisor, Dr. Andrew Sward, has been an excellent mentor, and I am deeply grateful for his constant support. His passion for mathematics and enthusiasm for teaching have made me truly enjoy the material we explore in class.
Dr. Forrest Stonedahl has challenged me to reach my full academic potential and has been instrumental in helping me transition toward a future in computer science.
Many professors in the music department have inspired me to become both a better musician and a better person. Dr. Jon Hurty, Dr. Michelle Crouch, Dr. Susan Stone and Dr. Hisham Bravo Groover have all taught me invaluable lessons through ensemble rehearsals and private lessons.
Dr. Amanda Sherrill has also played a key role in my journey. Making music together has deepened my love for music, and her constant encouragement and positivity always brightened my day.
Peak experience?
I have had many memorable moments throughout my time here, but my peak experience has been performing my junior and senior music recitals. I have always loved performing, and sharing music I have spent countless hours practicing and rehearsing with some of the most important people in my life was incredibly special.
It was also really meaningful to have professors from both the music and math/computer science departments come to support me as I sang and played violin.
What surprised you?
Discovering my love for computer science as a sophomore was one of the biggest surprises, especially since it changed my career trajectory. Adding it as a third major and completing the degree on time may not have been possible at many schools, and I'm grateful that Augustana gave me the opportunity to explore and pursue this passion, which has truly changed my life.
How did you use your Augie Choice?
I used my Augie Choice to travel to Germany and the Czech Republic on tour with the Augustana Choir the summer after my first year of college! It was really special to share our music and have a meaningful impact on people who did not necessarily even speak the same language as us.
What will you miss the most?
I will truly miss performing with the Augustana Choir and the Augustana Symphony Orchestra. I will always cherish the memories I've made as a member of these ensembles.
Advice for the Class of 2029?
Remember that balance is key, even if it's hard to find at first. Balancing academics, extracurriculars and a social life has been one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced over the past four years. Work hard and have fun, but don't forget to take care of your health and well-being.
