Why Augustana?
When I entered Augustana, I was an undecided major. I was drawn to the college's variety of academic programs. I knew I wanted to attend a school where I could thrive both academically and athletically.
Augustana offered the right balance for me. It gave me the opportunity to continue my passion for swimming while also striving to be the best student I could be. From the moment I visited campus, it felt like a place where I was comfortable and could truly see myself succeeding.
Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?
I've grown far beyond what I ever imagined when I arrived on campus. I came in shy and reserved, but over time I've become confident, outgoing and deeply involved in the Augustana community.
I've had the opportunity to lead as captain of the swim team, join a Greek organization, work for the Office of Admissions and work with a variety of school districts throughout my clinical experience.
Who helped you get to where you are now?
I would not be where I am today without the support system I've built at Augustana. The friendships and professional relationships I've formed have carried me through all the challenges and triumphs. I am grateful for their impact on my time here.
The professors and staff in the education department, especially my advisor Michael Schroeder, have constantly encouraged and supported me. Their guidance has helped me to grow into the teacher that I am today.
My teammates and coach, Dan Lloyd, have shown me what a true community feels like and taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. The experiences I've gained from being a part of the swim team will definitely carry over into my future classroom.
Peak experience?
I had the opportunity to complete my student teaching at John Deere Middle School. I was able to teach numerous hands-on science lessons and further develop my own philosophy of education. It was incredibly rewarding to create meaningful relationships with the students and see the growth I made as a teacher.
What surprised you?
I was surprised by the willingness my professors and coaches had when it came to helping me succeed in the classroom and pool. My professors were always welcoming and supportive whenever I reached out for help, and my coaches showed unwavering support for myself and my teammates as we balanced the student-athlete schedule.
How did you use your Augie Choice?
I used my Augie Choice to support my student-teaching experience. This allowed me to purchase professional attire, cover commuting expenses and even invest in additional lesson materials.
What will you miss the most?
What I'll miss most about Augie are the people. I'll miss the everyday interactions with friends around campus, such as studying in the Brew, meeting for dinner in the CSL or running into them on the Slough path. The community here is what truly made Augustana feel like home, and I'm grateful to have met people who make saying goodbye so difficult.
Advice for the Class of 2029?
These next four years fly by, so make the most of every moment! Take every opportunity that comes your way, even if you are afraid. You never know what might come from a new class, a friendship or opportunity unless you take the chance to try it.
"Bella decided early in her Augie career that her goal was to become a middle school science teacher, and she has worked tirelessly to make that dream come true. She has all the qualities that we'd like to see in a future educator — Bella is creative, personable, hard working and inspiring. She is incredibly knowledgeable in her field, and has the curiosity of a scientist. I have no doubt that Bella will be a real leader on her faculty team, just as she has been on campus!"
