More Than I Imagined Seniors reflect on accomplishments and look ahead

Richard Pipes Jr.

Graduation year: 2014

Major: Classics

Minor: History

Activities: Augustana Choir, Collegia Classica, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity

Post-grad plans: I hope to attend school in Athens, Greece. The program is called College Year in Athens.

Why did you choose to attend Augustana?

I chose Augustana because of how beautiful the campus is, how small the classes are and because it’s a liberal arts school.

Are you where you thought you’d be four years ago?

I am where I thought I’d be and further. I have learned so much over the last four years, and this has pushed me way past what I hoped to accomplish.

Who helped you get to where you are now?

My professors Dr. Day, Dr. Kramer, Dr. Hooker and my friends who share my major because they pushed me to do better and helped me to better understand the subjects that I was working on. Without them I would not be where I am today, and I am grateful for them.

A peak experience?

One of my peak experiences was my trip to Rome because I had been studying the ancient culture and history. It truly blew my mind to finally go to the place that I had studied for a long time. I got to see monuments that I had only seen in pictures and books. It was truly surreal for me.

What did you learn about yourself in these past four years that surprised you?

I have learned that if I work hard enough at something I can eventually understand it. Latin is one of those of things where I've made progress, thanks to hard work.

How did you use your Augie Choice?

I used my Augie Choice for a trip to Germany with the Augustana Choir.

What will you miss the most?

I will really miss the connections that I have made with my professors and friends.

Advice for the Class of 2018?

Manage your time, don’t overcommit to one class, and make the most out of your time here.

"As a major in Classics, a field that is interdisciplinary by nature, and as one who has taken full advantage of extra- and co-curricular opportunities — from his involvement in the college choir and our Classics-interest group Collegia Classica to off-campus experiences like travel to academic conferences and study abroad — Richard Pipes has utilized his time at Augustana well, immersing himself fully in a true liberal arts educational experience."
