New faces

The Religion department welcomed two new faculty members this fall: Dr. Michelle Wolff, assistant professor, and Cuma Ozkan, teaching fellow.

Dr. Wolff comes to Augustana from Duke University and will be teaching courses on ethics, religion, Christian theology, race, gender, and sexuality.

She has B.A. from Westmont College, an M.T.S. from Duke Divinity School and a Ph.D. from Duke University.

She also completed a certificate in college teaching and certificate in feminist studies at Duke in 2017. Her dissertation, "Intimate Life Together: A Decolonial Theology," investigates the sexual politics of religion in South Africa.

Ozkan, who will teach courses on Islam, is a post-graduate student at the University of Iowa with a background in religious studies and Asian and Slavic languages and literatures.

He earned a B.A. from Ankara University; an M.A., religious studies from the University of Iowa; and an M.A., Asian and Slavic languages and literatures, University of Iowa.

He specializes in the history of Islam in China and comparative Chinese religions. He is currently writing his dissertation, "Contesting Sinicization: A New Approach to the Chinese Muslim Scholarship of Late Imperial China (the Han Kitab)."

Dr. Nirmala S. Salgado, department chair, presented work on Sri Lankan Buddhist nuns at the Sakyadhita International Conference on Buddhist Women at the University of Hong Kong in June 2017 and at the American Anthropological Association conference in Washington, D.C., in December 2017.

Her article, “Tradition, Power, and Community Among Buddhist Nuns in Sri Lanka” was published in the Journal of Buddhist Ethics (vol. 24; 2017).

Students in Dr. Emily Kahm’s spring course, American Catholicism, conducted individual interviews of Catholic sisters and nuns as part of the coursework.

The most intriguing findings from each interview were selected, refined, and written into short documents as part of a project to encapusulate the wisdom of women religious in the United States.

The students’ work is stored at Augustana Digital Commons
