The region's largest academic employer, the University of Iowa, is less than an hour from the Quad Cities. There are, in addition, three other private colleges, a satellite campus for Western Illinois University, four community colleges, two specialty colleges and a host of elementary and secondary schools within a reasonable driving distance of campus.
The region's largest private employer is Deere & Co., whose world headquarters is in Moline, Illinois — about six miles from campus. Other major employers include Arconic (2,500 employees), the Rock Island Arsenal (1,800), Oscar Mayer Foods (1,800), Case Corporation (1,600) and two major hospital systems which employ 2,500 people between them.
