Tutoring guidelines and policies

Policies

Appointment and drop-in tutoring is available for any current Augustana student enrolled in a course for which we have qualified tutors. See our tutoring website for a complete list of courses we support, our drop-in tutoring schedule, and instructions for how to make and cancel appointments through Starfish.

Peer academic coaching appointments are available for currently enrolled Augustana students who are seeking to improve their learning regardless of which courses they are taking. See our academic coaching website for a complete list of commonly explored topics and instructions for how to make an appointment through Starfish.

Appointment Policies

Students may sign up for and cancel their own appointments through Starfish. Please review our step-by-step instructions for how to do so. Appointments are available to book several weeks in advance, so check back daily for more coaching and tutoring openings. Students are limited to two appointments per day, per class and no more than three appointments per class a week. For courses that are in high demand, we may enforce stricter limitations. Additional appointments may be made only with the approval of the Director, Alex Crawford.

Academic Coaches, Students, and Tutors may cancel appointments with at least 24 hours’ notice unless there is an emergency or illness. Students who are consistently late or do not show up for their scheduled appointment times lose their individual tutoring privileges. To avoid a missed appointment penalty, appointments must be canceled or rescheduled at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time. If canceling an appointment with less than 24 hours’ notice, students should email the tutor to let them know of the change of plans.

If a student is more than 15 minutes late to a scheduled appointment (even if they inform the tutor in advance), our staff reserves the right to refuse services, mark the appointment as missed, and to ask to reschedule the appointment.

Drop-in Policies

Students can come in anytime during the posted hours for assistance, but we recommend students budget their time. Do not come to drop-in hours at the last minute and expect the tutor to stay longer to help. Our tutors will do their best to assist everyone, but they will work on a first-come, first-served basis, so please be patient if they are working with someone when you first walk in. Our tutors may also group you with other students who are currently enrolled in the course — take advantage of this time and work with your classmates.

Drop-in support will be available during a variety of days and hours during the semester, so please check our schedule for more details. Only certain courses are supported each night, and if a student is seeking help in a course that isn’t listed on our drop-in schedule, there are no guarantees our tutors will be able to help with a course they are unfamiliar with.

COVID policies

If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, test positive for COVID-19, or learn that you have been recently exposed to someone who has tested positive, contact Augustana Public Safety per Augustana College guidelines. Do not come to sessions with a tutor or coach if you are ill or have been exposed to someone who tested positive.
