Kaleidoscope will offer classes and workshops for ages 4 through adult Oct. 2-Nov. 20, 2021.

Classes are held at the Augustana Art Studio Building, 610 35th St., Rock Island, Ill., 61201. (Map

The fee is $46 per class. Materials are included. There will be activities and supervision during the break between classes. Please have children dress appropriately for art classes that can get messy!

All children, staff, and teachers will be required to wear masks at all times. We will practice social distancing in all classes.

Happy Halloween

We'll make "spooktacular" art with a variety of materials just in time for Halloween! Join us for some ghostbusting fun.

Global Art Festival!
Let's take a trip around the world and learn how different countries celebrate fall. We will make art from Mexico, China, India and the United States. From dancing skeletons to colorful flowers and full moons, we’ll create projects  inspired by magical world parties.

Mask Up!
Get in the spirit of Halloween as we look at masks from around the world. We will work in papier mâché, cardboard, and upcycled materials as we invent our own mask creatures.  
7-8 year olds | Lee White| $46

What goes bump in the night? We will explore and create creepy creatures and nasties from nature using a multitude of artistic medium.

Secret World of Trees
There is no end to the marvel of trees. Hear stories about trees and animals that make trees their home. Learn about texture, lines and colors we explore the many worlds of a tree! We’ll do printmaking, tree inspired paintbrushes, and multi-media art projects

Fall Follies
Orange, Yellow and Red Oh My! This class will feature all the colors of autumn as we create art from all kinds of objects - cardboard, paper towel rolls, plastic bowls, pipe cleaners and more!

Mask Making
Bring your imagination to this class! We’ll explore different cultural expression through the masks we make. We’ll invent masks out of papier mâché, cardboard, and upcycled materials with the animated characteristics of your favorite monsters or cartoon characters.

Art Chefs!
Become an artist chef! Make “food” using paper, clay and paint and even use food to make art! Explore other artists like Paul Cezanne and Wayne Thiebaud who also loved making art about food!

Autumn Pastel Drawing 
Learn new techniques in pastel drawing as we look at pumpkins, gourds and all shapes of autumn.
7-8 year olds | Heike Ehlers | $46

Winter Playground
The weather outside might be getting frightful, but we will be warm and toasty as we create winter themed art projects that will last all year long! We will work with a variety of materials.
7-10 year olds | Seth Chappell | $46

Wood Construction
Using wood and other materials, we will look at architectural forms, vehicles, and even animals as we invent our own structures! Learn and apply basic techniques as we build sculptures and 3-D wood assemblages using various shapes and sizes. We will paint our constructions with tempera and acrylic!

Staying Groovy with Pete the Cat 
Each week we will read a book from the vast collection of Pete! From pirates to dinosaurs Pete always knows how to have a good time and young artists will have a good time making art about these classic books.

Sculpture Time!
Using wood and other materials make your own invention!  Learn and apply beginning construction methods as we build 3-D objects and collages large and small! We will also paint our inventions!

POP Goes the Art
Explore the bright and creative world of “Pop Art”. Using paint, marker and imagination, we will create, create, create!

Wind in the Trees
Learn drawing techniques and explore color. Use all the warm colors of fall as we draw various local landscapes.

Mini-class: Saturday, Oct. 16 and 23

1-2:30 p.m.

Harvest Moonlight 
Join us as we create Moonlight Jars with dancing cats plus a metal tooled owl design in an “illuminated moonlit” window. A wide variety of mixed media materials will be used.

Who's who at Kaleidoscope

Rowen Schussheim-Anderson, Director, professor in the Augustana Art Department, has taught here since 1982, when she started Kaleidoscope. With a B.F.A. from Rochester Institute of Technology and an M.F.A. from Arizona State University, she exhibits her work internationally.

Julie Schneider is the registrar for Kaleidoscope and the secretary of the Art Department.

Seth Chappell is a premier puppet creator and artist. He specializes in designing original custom puppets for a variety of mediums, including stage and video.

Heike Ehlers has a B.A. from Augustana College and an M.F.A. from the University of Illinois-Urbana. She has taught at the elementary through high school levels.

Jennifer Lanphere received her B.A. from University of Iowa. She taught for 30 years in the Davenport School system.

Chris Sederstrom has a B.A. from Marycrest and an M.A. from Xavier University. She has taught art for 35 years and is also active at the Figge Art Museum.

Leana Carter has a B.A. In English and Art from the University of Iowa and a teaching degree from Humboldt State University. She has taught art in California, Mexico and now in the Davenport Community Schools.

Lee White, a part-time professor in the Art Departments of Augustana College and St. Ambrose, has an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the University of Iowa. He exhibits his work internationally.
