Kaleidoscope offer classes and workshops for ages 4 through adult.

Classes are held at the Augustana Art Studio Building, 610 35th St., Rock Island, Ill., 61201. (Map

Materials are included in the class fee. There will be activities and supervision during the break between classes. Please have children dress appropriately for art classes that can get messy!

All children, staff, and teachers will be required to wear masks at all times. We will practice social distancing in all classes.

Heart Art

1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5

Warm the hearts of family and friends with one-of-a-kind handmade Valentines. We will explore a variety of materials. Fee is $14.

A Very Hungry Caterpillar

Explore the books and art of Eric Carle through hands-on art projects. We will hear stories and make our own characters and animals using paint and collage techniques!

Let’s explore the universe! We will create two and three-dimensional art from all kinds of household items!

Pastel Studio

Learn to work with oil and chalk pastels. Compose landscapes, portraits and other genres.

Space Explorers

Take a trip to space through art! We will make straw rockets and create our own universes while exploring in tempera paint, clay and chalk pastels!

Pokemon Drawing

Using a variety of media, we will learn how to draw. We will draw Pokemon and other characters.

Leprechauns and Woodland Folk

What’s behind that tree?  Who’s under that rock?  We will create mixed media art based on mystical and mythical creatures from folklore.

Color Party

Look at artists who loved colors like Alma Thomas and Mark Rothko. Be a color scientist by mixing and exploring the beautiful world of colors! Explore different art materials such as watercolors and oil pastels to create colorful masterpieces.

Animals in our Backyard

We will draw our favorite animals that live nearby. We’ll explore a wide variety of drawing media.

Buggies, Buggies, Buggies

Insects, arachnids and all sorts of creepy crawlers come out for springtime fun.  Let’s make our own mixed media creations to share our love of bugs.

Art is Everywhere!

Check out artists like El Anatsui who makes art with recycled materials. Learn how art can be discovered in very surprising places. Use found objects to make sculptures and other art works.

Under the Sea

All kinds of fun awaits beneath the waves as we take a dive and explore the ocean. Create using mixed media.

Who's who at Kaleidoscope

Rowen Schussheim-Anderson, director, has taught at Augustana since 1982, when she started Kaleidoscope. With a B.F.A. from Rochester Institute of Technology and an M.F.A. from Arizona State University, she exhibits her work internationally.

Julie Schneider is the registrar for Kaleidoscope and the secretary of the artdepartment.

Leana Carter has a B.A. in English and art from the University of Iowa and a teaching degree from Humboldt State University. She has taught art in California, Mexico and the Davenport Community Schools.

Seth Chappell is a premier puppet creator and artist. He specializes in designing original custom puppets for a variety of mediums, including stage and video.

Heike Ehlers has a B.A. from Augustana College and an M.F.A. from the University of Illinois-Urbana. She has taught at the elementary through high school levels.

Cate Strahl has a B.A. in elementary education from Augustana College. She has worked with students of all ages and currently is a fourth-grade teacher in the Bettendorf School District.
