Why Augustana?

I chose Augustana for a multitude of reasons. The first being the family connection that I had to the school. My mother and older sister attended Augie, and I was able to hear about the amazing academics that the school offered.

Augustana is close to home, and on top of that they gave me an offer I couldn't refuse. Augustana gave me the opportunity to pursue a higher education with the help of many generous scholarships.

Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?

I did not set any expectations for myself when I arrived on campus. All I knew was that I wanted to major in something that I was passionate about. With the help of the CORE office, I determined that education was the right path for me. I am very thankful for my choice and the opportunities and experiences that I had because of my major.

Who helped you get to where you are now?

I would first like to thank my family, my mom, sister and two younger brothers for always encouraging me on my college journey. They have always given me the support and reassurance I needed to be the best student that I could be and make the most out of my college experience!

I also want to thank my professors in the education department. Each professor always offered support and encouragement. Thank you Professor Shepherd and Dr. Delaney for always offering words of encouragement during my clinical and student teaching experiences, and helping me improve my skills as an educator. Thank you Dr. Scarlett for all your support and help throughout my social studies endorsement!

And I would also like to thank Dr. Marmé and Profesora Colmenares for being awesome professors!

Peak experience?

My final year here at Augustana! In the fall, I was able to do my student teaching and be in the classroom full time and teach! During my J-term, I went on a study abroad trip to Japan with one of my great friends. We made so many amazing memories together, along with the new experiences that I will always cherish.

What surprised you?

I love the academics here at Augustana! Almost every class that I have taken has interested me, including those that are outside of my major. I feel that I have learned so much, and I have a better understanding of the world around me. I feel that the rigor, discussions and experience with each of my professors have enlightened me and made me appreciate my education more.

How did you use your Augie Choice?

I used my Augie Choice to study in Japan! I want to shout out and thank Miyuki and Chika for making the whole experience very memorable.

What will you miss the most?

The learning environment here at Augustana. I will miss taking courses and making connections from things that I learned in one class to another. I will miss my class schedule and the mini-breaks that I had in-between and not having a class every day. I will also miss the fun moments with my friends on campus and making memories together!

Advice for the Class of 2030?

Use this time to expand your knowledge. Use your brain to critically think — not AI. The only way we can innovate and grow as individuals is through life and academic experiences. AI cannot do that for you. USE YOUR BRAIN! If you are not making mistakes, you are not learning!

"Ximena has been an exceptional addition to the education department! She brings intelligence and genuine joy to everything she does, and her warmth and deep respect for her students shine through in everything she does. Her future students are so lucky! Her classroom will be a place where students feel seen and are excited to learn. I can't wait to see all the things Ximena achieves!"
