Why Augustana?
Augustana has felt like home for as long as I can remember; my mom has worked at Augie since I was practically a baby, so it has always been very familiar.
Originally, I wanted to branch out and attend college elsewhere, but the moment I met the faculty, staff and cross-country team at Augie, I immediately knew it was the place for me. Although initially nervous about staying in my hometown, the "Augie Bubble" made it feel like a whole new world on campus.
Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?
Absolutely not. I came to campus as a timid, shy and scared young girl. I can confidently say that after four years of mentorship, learning and stepping out of my comfort zone, I am more prepared for the next step than I could have ever imagined.
The faculty and staff played a major role in my growth, helping me build confidence and resilience along the way. I'm not exactly where I thought I would be, but I am exactly where I am meant to be, and better prepared than I ever expected.
Who helped you get to where you are now?
I am incredibly grateful to the many people who have helped me get to where I am today. My parents have been my strongest supporters, and I cannot thank them enough for the sacrifices, encouragement and guidance they have given me throughout my life. Their belief in me has been the foundation that has pushed me forward even during challenging times.
I have also been fortunate to spend the past four years surrounded by amazing roommates who have influenced me in countless positive ways. They have supported me and inspired me to grow into a more driven and well-rounded person.
Lastly, I want to recognize Dr. Kimberly Murphy, who has been my mentor since I was a young recruit. Her mentorship has been instrumental in my development, providing me with opportunities to learn, lead and gain confidence in myself. Because of her guidance, I have been able to grow both personally and professionally into who I am today.
Peak experience?
My study abroad trip to Guatemala. This experience played a key role in my personal growth and strengthened my ability to guide my actions with empathy. I formed meaningful connections with classmates who eventually became some of my closest friends.
Thanks to Dr. Jessica Schultz, the trip was thoughtfully structured with a strong balance of academic learning and immersive experiences that challenged us to step outside our comfort zones, where the magic happens.
What surprised you?
I was surprised by the number of opportunities Augustana offers. Whether it’s internships, study abroad opportunities, hands-on lab experience or even creating your own research study, Augustana has it all! I was amazed by the many opportunities at a small D3 liberal arts school — that truly set Augie apart from other schools!
How did you use your Augie Choice?
I used my Augie Choice to study in Guatemala, where i had the absolute best experience. Because of Augustana's J-term, there are many opportunities to study abroad. I was lucky enough to have the ability to study abroad twice, and went scuba diving in Bonaire during this past J-term!
What will you miss the most?
I am beginning to realize that the thing I will miss the most is the small moments that occur while living with your best friends. Whether it be random laughs while studying, quick coffee trips or nights staying up way too late because you can't stop the conversation and go to bed.
I feel so lucky to be leaving Augustana with lifelong friends, but I cannot deny that I will forever wish I could go back to these small moments, even if only for a second.
Advice for the Class of 2030?
Enjoy every moment. You will truly be shocked by how fast time flies by, and sooner or later, you will be in my position, wishing you could relive, or replay, your college experience. Although it can feel overwhelming, try your best to soak it all in because you'll be amazed how fast it goes!
"I have had the privilege of mentoring Rylee for the past three years through her work with the Augustana College Center for the Advancement of Community Health and Wellness. During that time, I have watched her push herself to grow, gaining confidence and developing a genuine commitment to improving the well-being of others. Rylee brings curiosity and determination to her work. Her strong academic foundation, combined with meaningful hands-on experience in community movement and wellness initiatives, has prepared her exceptionally well for graduate study and the impact she will make."
