Why Augustana?

Augustana was on my radar ever since my older sister had four amazing years here. I enjoyed growing up in a small community with a close-knit high school, so I wanted something similar during college. I visited multiple liberal art colleges and fell in love with the community and opportunities at Augustana.

Are you where you thought you'd be four years ago?

I came to Augustana with plans to study marketing and management. Having a multitude of experiences in the classroom, various clubs and a range of internships, Augustana has helped me realize my passions and strongest skills, which inspired me to pursue majors in accounting and finance.

Who helped you?

My parents have always given me the support to pursue my passions and have been extremely encouraging every step of the way. I have also had multiple faculty mentors and friends help shape me into the person I am today. Dr. Delaney has pushed me academically in the classroom and outside of the classroom as well. CORE helped me understand the framework of a résumé freshman year and provided me support all the way through senior year in evaluating job offers.

A peak experience?

Interning in Australia my senior year. It was my first time traveling internationally, opening my eyes to new cultures and viewpoints. The program was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What has surprised you?

My newly found openness to change will serve me well not only in my professional endeavors but in my personal ones as well. It has ultimately given me the confidence that I needed to go above and beyond what I could have seen myself doing before I came to Augustana.

How did you use your Augie Choice?

I used my Augie Choice to make the Australia program a reality for me.

What will you miss the most?

The number of lifelong friendships that I have made was hard to imagine four years ago. How close I’ve become with my professors is something I never expected. Leaving behind my fraternity brothers of Delta Omega Nu will be difficult, but I look forward to visiting in the years to come.

Advice for the Class of 2020?

Get involved! One of the best decisions I made freshman year was getting involved in multiple clubs that sparked my interest. That involvement allowed me to discover my passions and find direction in my college career, ultimately leading to where I am today.

“Justin has really made the most of his time at Augustana. In addition to terrific work in the classroom, Justin has compiled an impressive list of work and volunteer experiences. Deere & Company made a wise choice when they hired Justin as a part-time student worker, and an even better choice when he was hired for a full-time opportunity (among many offers he received). Justin is our Outstanding Accounting Student for the Class of 2016, which pretty much sums up what we think of him. He is a star at Augustana and will no doubt be a star at Deere & Company.”
