Melissa Schaefer started her career as a speech pathologist in a hospital setting, which allowed her to work a broad spectrum. She has provided services through the lifespan, from infant to geriatric, through inpatient, outpatient, early Intervention and home health.

She is particularly interested in dysphagia, both the anatomic and physiological causes. From the hospital she moved into the skilled nursing home sector, where she spent 10 1/2 years. During this time she predominantly on cognitive communicative disorders, dysphagia, and voice and language disorders.
