Donald C. Umland

Director of Campus Recreation

Don enters the 2023/24 year as his 29th here at Augustana (1995). In fact, he has been the only Campus Recreation Director associated the college as he arrived with the opening of the Pepsico Rec Center that same year. As director, he oversees the development of intramurals, sport clubs, health and wellness as well as facility operations for the department.

While there is no PE Major, several individuals that have worked within the department have went on to serve as leaders in Campus Recreation and officiating of various sports with some achieving high school state championship status as well as collegiate careers in Division I, II and III.

When away from Augie, Don officiates high school football and basketball and Division I baseball. He is also the Division III National Coordinator of Umpires. Free time circulates around his family where he is married to his wife of 29 years (Jenny) and their three sons Taylor, Matt and Jack.

"Service to the students" and to promote "life skills" beyond the academic scope continue to be Don's mantra in regards to his position with the college. Don states, "Academics is an integral part of the maturation process while at Augie, but that only takes up a certain amount of time. A healthy lifestyle with a purpose to serve others is something I strive to promote."
