Work-life balance in higher education

Managing workload during peak semester times

The academic calendar brings unique rhythms of activity — quiet lulls at times, and intense bursts of responsibility during others. At times with overwhelming workloads for employees in higher education, it is crucial to find ways to manage these demands effectively. While these peaks are a natural part of the academic cycle, they don’t have to lead to burnout. By adopting intentional strategies, faculty and staff can maintain their well-being while navigating these busy periods.

Why work-life balance is essential in higher education

  1. Sustains effectiveness: Faculty and staff who manage their energy maintain higher levels of productivity, creativity and patience. This balance not only enhances individual performance but also positively affects students and colleagues.
  2. Prevents burnout: Chronic stress during heavy workload seasons can lead to disengagement and serious health challenges. Prioritizing work-life balance helps avert these negative outcomes, fostering a healthier work environment.
  3. Improves campus culture: When employees model a healthy balance, it creates a more supportive and sustainable environment, benefiting both staff and students. A balanced approach encourages mutual respect and collaboration among colleagues.

Higher education thrives on dedication, but balance ensures sustainability. By preparing for the academic cycle, prioritizing tasks and embracing boundaries, employees can manage peak semester demands more effectively — supporting not only their own well-being but also the success of the entire campus community.

AllOne Health - Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

AllOne Health, Augustana’s free Employee Assistance Program (EAP), is designed to support the mental health and general well-being of faculty, staff and their household members, recognizing the unique pressures of the academic environment. It offers a wide range of services, including brief, professional counseling for personal and work-related stressors, such as anxiety, depression, relationship issues and grief. Employees can proactively utilize this benefit to prevent burnout and mitigate chronic stress by accessing resources like financial and legal consultations, personalized well-being coaching for sleep or nutrition, and digital tools for stress management and mindfulness. By confidentially addressing life challenges before they reach a crisis point, the EAP empowers employees to maintain better work-life balance, enhance their resilience and ultimately sustain their productivity and satisfaction in their roles.

The AllOne Health Employee Assistance Program offers confidential assistance to Augustana employees (both full-time and part-time) and their families. Your personal information remains confidential unless you provide written consent or as required by law.
