Tea Talks: Black/Queer Intersections
The Women's & Gender Studies Tea Talks series features faculty, staff and guest speakers on a range of topics. Today's talk will be by Simone Roby, fellowship instructor of psychology, on "Black/Queer Intersections."
Lectures are free and open to the public as well as the campus community. Refreshments are served.
Roby is a Ph.D. candidate in counseling psychology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She explores intersectional identity experiences of Black and African American college students attending predominantly white institutions.
This presentation will explore the ways overlapping systems of oppression (e.g. racism, sexism, heterosexism, classism, and ableism) normalize “mainstream” LGBT identities by perpetuating anti-Blackness. The talk also will sample representations of Black LGBTQIA+ identity experiences in media and art.
