Campus update for May 1, 2020

May 1, 2020

Dear students,

We will celebrate your accomplishments this year, coronavirus notwithstanding.

True, for seniors, there will not be the traditional Honors Convocation on campus but...those seniors who have earned special recognition should keep an eye on the mailbox (the one outside the door).

Students of all years who received an academic award this year will be listed on our website later this month.

CARES Act funding

Less than a week ago Augustana received CARES Act funding. The college wants to ensure it uses the funds in the best possible way. We carefully are considering existing guidance from the U.S. Department of Education, along with our understanding of the greatest area of student need. We will finalize our distribution plan soon.

"We are committed to doing all we can for students during this challenging time. Ensuring that eligible students with need receive CARES grants as soon as possible is a top priority," said Kirk Anderson, chief financial officer.

The Faces of Resilience Project

The Augustana Observer is looking for the names of people to highlight in its Faces of Resilience Project.

Do you know a member of the Augustana community who has gone above and beyond during distance learning or demonstrated creative ways to stay connected? Perhaps a friend who has bounced back from adversity or supported others?

Send your nominee's name and a brief description to the Observer to be featured in an upcoming online issue. Deadline is May 6.

Today's podcast: Memes as coping mechanism

Today's throwback: May Day 1910, from the Observer: "As has been the custom on May Day for many years, the college band arose at five o'clock in the morning and filled the air in the immediate vicinity of the college with melodious strains that awakened everybody to a realization that May had really come at last."
