Susan D. Schwaegler

Part-time Instructor of Music; Clarinet, Clarinet Choir

Susan D. Schwaegler holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and a Master of Pastoral Studies from St. Ambrose University, Davenport, Iowa. She is an Instructor of Clarinet at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, where she also teaches Woodwind Methods, directs the Clarinet Choir, and performs with the Faculty Woodwind Quintet and Kali Yuga, the college's free improvisation ensemble. She served for eight years as Liturgy Coordinator at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline, Illinois, and was active in the music ministry for 20 years as a singer, instrumentalist, and director of the Youth and Teen Choirs. She has also served on the faculties of St. Ambrose University and Black Hawk College, Moline, Illinois, as a clarinet instructor, and taught orchestra and choir at Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette, Illinois.

Ms. Schwaegler most recently studied with Himie Voxman, professor emeritus and former director of the School of Music at the University of Iowa. Her principal teacher at Northwestern was Clark Brody, then the principal clarinetist of the Chicago Symphony. She has also worked with Wesley Foster and Larry Combs.

She has appeared with the Quad City Symphony and Orchestra Iowa as a section substitute, and did outreach tours as a member of the Quad City Symphony Woodwind Quintet. She is a charter member of the Quad City Wind Ensemble, and has performed with the City Opera Company of the Quad Cities and the Quad City Music Guild. She is a former first clarinetist with the renowned Northshore Concert Band of Wilmette, Illinois, under the direction of the late John P. Paynter, and served as Librarian on his Band Staff while a student at Northwestern. She is a member of the International Clarinet Association.
