Paper on Asian American experience wins Tredway Prize

Alison Lawrence, a sophomore from Roscoe, Ill., is the winner of the 2020 Tredway Library Prize for First-Year Research.

The $400 award recognizes an outstanding research project by a first-year student for a class in the First Year Inquiry or First Year Honors sequence.

Lawrence's paper, "Relationship Counseling for the U.S.: Understanding White America's Role in Asian American Experiences," was submitted with encouragement and support from Dr. Umme Al-wazedi.

Her paper explores the relationship between white Americans and Asian Americans to discover the root of the difficulties that first- and second-generation Asian Americans experience while attempting to integrate into American society. She analyzes perspectives from Asian American literature as well as historical and current events.

Lawrence is majoring in pre-medicine and Spanish. She is active in cross country and CAP, writes for Her Campus and tutors in the Reading/Writing Center.

The annual award promotes student engagement in library research and encourages them to synthesize information literacy skills with the reading, writing and critical thinking skills developed in the first-year sequences.
