Office of Residential Life discipline and sanctions

This information is a general guideline for disciplinary actions and represents minimum sanctions. Additional or different sanctions may be applied depending on the circumstances. Educational sanctions generally involve reflection essays and will be determined by the hearing officer based on the circumstances.

Hearing officers

First and second offenses will be heard by the resident director or area coordinator of a student’s residence hall. More serious or repeat offenses will be heard by the director of Residential Life or designee.

Repeat policy violations beyond those specified here and violations of the Augustana Code of Social Conduct will be adjudicated by the dean of students or designee.

Dangerous behavior, such as arson, physical or sexual assault, or possession of firearms, will be referred to the dean of students with a recommendation for suspension.

Violation of the alcohol policy

First offense: Warning and educational sanction, $25 fine (for beer or wine) or $50 fine (for hard liquor)
Second offense: Warning and educational sanction, $50 fine (for beer or wine) or $100 fine (for hard liquor)
Third offense: Warning and educational sanction, parental notification, possible reassignment, $200 fine (for beer or wine) or $400 fine (for hard liquor)
Fourth offense: Probation, parental notification, alcohol assessment, possible reassignment, $400 fine (for beer or wine) or $800 fine (for hard liquor), referral to Director of Residential Life

Large parties with guests under the age of 21

First offense: Warning and educational sanction, $200-$500 fine (based on number present), referral to Director of Residential Life
Second, third or fourth offense: Warning and educational sanction, referral to Dean of Students

Violation of the drug policy

Marijuana, less than 30 grams

First offense: Warning and educational sanction, $25 fine
Second offense: Warning and educational sanction, $50 fine
Third offense: Probation, parental notification, Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse class, $200 fine
Fourth offense: Referral to Dean of Students

Marijuana, more than 30 grams, prescription drugs, other illegal drugs

Any offense: Suspension, referral to Dean of Students

Environmental Safety

First or second offense: Warning and educational sanction, $75 (minimum) cleaning fee

Third offense: Probation, $75 (minimum) cleaning fee, educational sanction, referral to Director of Residential Life

Fourth offense: Referral to Dean of Students

Fighting

Any offense: Referral to Director of Residential Life or to Dean of Students depending on circumstances

Violation of the fire safety policy

Tampering with equipment/covering smoke detectors

First offense: Warning and educational sanction, $100 fine
Second offense: Warning and educational sanction, $200 fine
Third offense: Probation, educational sanction, referral to Director of Residential Life
Fourth offense: Referral to Director of Residential Life

Intentionally setting a false alarm, discharging extinguisher

First or second offense: Probation and educational sanction, referral to Director of Residential Life, $500 fine
Third or fourth offense: Probation and educational sanction, referral to Dean of Students

Activating a fire alarm due to candles or other policy violations

First offense: $100
Second offense: $200
Third offense: $500
Fourth offense: referral to the Dean of Students

Possession of unauthorized items

First offense: Warning and educational sanction, confiscation of items
Second offense: Warning and educational sanction, confiscation of items, $25 fine
Third offense: Probation, educational sanction, $50 fine
Fourth offense: Referral to Director of Residential Life

Fire setting

Any offense: Suspension, referral to Dean of Students, restitution

Failure to respond

First offense: Warning and educational sanction, $25 fine
Second offense: Warning and educational sanction, $50 fine
Third or fourth offense: Referral to Dean of Students

Harassment and hazing

Any offense: Referral to Dean of Students or Director of Residential Life

ID cards and keys

First offense: Warning
Second offense: Warning, $10 fine
Third offense: Warning, $25 fine
Fourth offense: Probation, $50 fine

Indoor and outdoor sports

First offense: Warning, $25 fine (for indoor use of wheels)
Second offense: Warning, $50 fine (for indoor use of wheels)
Third offense: Probation, $100 fine (for indoor use of wheels)

Fake IDs

First offense: Warning, $50 fine, educational sanction
Second offense and beyond: Referral to the Dean of Students Office

Noise and quiet hours

First offense: Warning
Second offense: Warning and educational sanction, $25 fine
Third offense: Probation and educational sanction, $50 fine
Fourth offense: Referral to Director of Residential Life

Violation of the non-compliance policy

Incomplete sanctions

First offense: Warning and double fines
Second offense: Warning and educational sanction, double fines
Third offense: Probation and educational sanction, referral to Director of Residential Life, double fines
Fourth offense: Referral to Dean of Students and double fines

Pets

First offense: Warning, $100 fine plus $25 for each additional day until animal is removed
Second offense: Probation, referral to Director of Residential Life, $100 fine plus $25 for each additional day until animal is removed
Third or fourth offense: Referral to Dean of Students, possible reassignment

Room decoration

First or second offense: Warning, removal or confiscation of item, educational sanction and/or restitution (when appropriate), $100 fine (per sign for stolen street signs and barriers)
Third or fourth offense: Referral to Director of Residential Life

Smoking/vaping/tobacco

First offense: Warning
Second offense: Warning and educational sanction, $25 fine
Third offense: Probation, referral to Director of Residential Life, educational sanction, $50 fine
Fourth offense: Referral to Dean of Students

Fire alarm evacuation

First offense: Warning, $100 fine
Second offense: Warning and educational sanction, $200 fine
Third offense: Probation, referral to Director of Residential Life, educational sanction, $500 fine
Fourth offense: Referral to Dean of Students

Violation of the theft policy

Theft, less than $500

Any offense: Referral to Director of Residential Life

Theft, more than $500

Any offense: Referral to Dean of Students, possible referral to Rock Island Police Department

Unauthorized access

First offense: Warning, $100 fine
Second offense: Probation, referral to Director of Residential Life, $200 fine
Third or fourth offense: Referral to Dean of Students

Unauthorized rooftop access

Any offense: Referral to Director of Residential Life or to Dean of Students, $500 fine

Trespassing during breaks

First offense: warning, must leave campus
Second offense: warning, $100 fine, lock change
Third offense: probation, $100 fine, lock change
Fourth offense: referral to the Dean of Students

Violation of the vandalism policy

Vandalism, less than $2,000

First offense: Warning and restitution
Second offense: Probation, referral to Director of Residential Life, restitution
Third or fourth offense: Referral to Dean of Students, possible reassignment

Vandalism, more than $2,000

Any offense: Referral to Dean of Students, restitution, possible referral to Rock Island Police Department

Visitation

First offense: Warning
Second offense: Warning, $25 fine
Third offense: Warning, $50 fine
Fourth offense: Probation, restriction of guest privileges, $50 fine

Violation of the weapons policy

First offense: Warning and confiscation
Second offense: Probation, confiscation, referral to Director of Residential Life
Third or fourth offense: Referral to Dean of Students

Firearms or explosives

Any offense: Suspension, referral to Dean of Students

Windows

First offense: Warning
Second offense: Warning, $25 fine
Third offense: Warning $50 fine
Fourth offense: Referral to Director of Residential Life
