Augie Sweethearts: Charlotte and Stan Hall, Class of 1954

Submitted by Charlotte Hall of Maricopa, Ariz.

During our days at Augustana, the men lived in Andreen; the women lived in the Women's Buildings on 7th Ave. During meal time, the 4 women and 2 men worked to help pay college expenses. In our junior year, 1952-53, my roommate was one of the dining room workers. And she had told me one of the men, Stan Hall, wanted to meet me. Stan was a junior transfer student from Wright Junior College in Chicago.

The following evening while pushing my tray along the rails and having my plate filled, I got to the end and saw Stan. When the dessert was placed on my tray, I was so flustered that I pushed the entire tray off the rails to the floor. VERY willingly, Stan got the tools to clean up the floor. And he hung around to be sure I got another meal and to a table without another mishap.

The following morning, between classes, Stan stopped me just outside Old Main and asked me out for the following weekend. I had promised to go to my mother's in Davenport so I declined. But we had our first date the next weekend in mid-October. And were engaged in the summer of 1953. Our wedding was the weekend we graduated on June 4, 1954. Stan went on to the Seminary and I taught school in Rock Island. He was ordained in 1958. He passed away in April of 1992 from years of serious heart conditions.
