Earth Hour: Power Down for Earth

Join the global movement and turn off your lights for one hour on March 20!

For one hour, on one day a year, major cities across the globe shut off their lights for the sake of the planet. From the Eiffel Tower to the skyscrapers of Singapore, global national landmarks go dark as residents raise awareness for human-caused environmental degradation.

While Augustana may be on a different scale than Paris, we have the opportunity to stand alongside the globe in this annual event.

This event will feature Dr. Jackie Opfer, Pastor Melinda and Augie students talking about environmental science, engineering, climate issues, goals and campus sustainability. Ray Wolf, a Quad Cities legend addressing climate change modeling work, will also speak.

Old Main's exterior lighting will be turned off between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.

This event is made possible by unique collaborations across campus organizations and student clubs.

About Earth Hour

Earth Hour is a global movement that began in Sydney, Australia in 2007. For one hour, all unnecessary illumination of public monuments such as the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge were turned off, and this idea quickly spread. Over 190 countries and territories have embraced Earth Hour as a way of raising awareness for environmental degradation and the need for public engagement in sustainability.
