2008-09 Season - 2005-06 WOMEN'S TENNIS REVIEW

Vikings take fourth in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tennis tournament

 

The Augustana Vikings put the finishing touches on the fall portion of the 2005-06 women’s tennis season with a fourth place finish at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament on October 7-8 at Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Illinois. Wheaton won the team title with 72 points while Carthage was second with 60. Illinois Wesleyan scored 48 points for third place and the Vikings of head coach Pat Marsh tallied 20 points in fourth. North Central (12), Elmhurst (7), Millikin (6) and North Park (0) rounded out the field.

 

Four singles players and a pair of doubles teams took fourth to lead the Augustana attack.

 

At number two singles Kelsi Walters (Champaign Centennial HS, Champaign, Ill.) finished fourth, losing in the third place match to Allison Heim of Illinois Wesleyan 8-1. Walters lost to Eliza Buys of Carthage 6-2; 6-0 in the first round before bouncing back to defeat Kelly Hatch of North Central 8-3 in the consolation round.

 

Greta Knudson (Washington HS, Washington, Ill.) was fourth at number three, losing to Debbie Bartell of Illinois Wesleyan 6-0; 6-2 in the first round before defeating Kristen Sproat of Millikin 8-0 in the consolation bracket. She then dropped an 8-3 decision to Taylor Gustafson of Carthage for third place.

 

Allison Bernardi (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.) opened up with a win over Traci Rapp of Millikin 6-4; 6-2 at  number before falling to Shannon Hale of Wheaton 6-4; 6-1 in the semi-finals. Bernardi beat Sarah Stachnik of Elmhurst in the consolation round 8-2 before losing to Sandy Tobik of Illinois Wesleyan in the third place match 8-5.

 

Faith Leaich (Belvidere HS, Belvidere, Ill.) took fourth at number five. She beat Sabrinia Ruff of Elmhurst 6-1; 6-0 in the first round and fell to Sarah Rusch of Illinois Wesleyan 6-0; 6-0 in the semifinals. Leaich beat Bella Nguyen of North Central 8-1 before falling to Erin Powers of Carthage 9-7 for third place.

 

In doubles action Kara Klepp (Pontiac HS, Saunemin, Ill.) and Bernardi took fourth at number two and Knudson and Leaich did the same at number three. Klepp and Bernardi opened with a 7-6; 6-4 win over Kelly Hatch and Gia Navarra of North Central in the first round before losing to Debbie Bartell and Kristina Sawyer of Illinois Wesleyan 7-5; 6-2 in the semifinals. They defeated Traci Rapp and Kristen Sproat of Millikin 9-7 in the consolation round before falling to Sandy Tobik and Hana Mueller of Illinois Wesleyan 8-3 for third place.

 

The Vikings of head coach Pat Marsh went 3-6 in overall dual meets and 3-3 in the CCIW. Bernardi led the team in singles victories with a 7-8 record. Bernardi and Klepp ended up with the best record in doubles action with a mark of 5-3. After losing the first four matches of the season, Augustana finished with wins in three of the last five.
