2008-09 Season - 2006-07 WOMEN'S TENNIS REVIEW

Augustana wraps up fall season in women’s tennis with 7-6 record; team places fourth at CCIW Championships; Vikings knock off Midwest Conference Champion Grinnell in spring season

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.The Augustana women’s tennis team finished the fall portion of its season with a 7-6 record and a 3-3 mark in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.  The Vikings placed fourth at the CCIW Championships on Friday, October 6 and Saturday, October 7 by compiling 28 points at the event.  The team earned wins over Wartburg, Millikin, North Central, Elmhurst, Quincy, and defeated St. Ambrose twice.  The Vikings picked things back up in the spring, kicking off by competing in three matches in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and finishing with a loss to nationally ranked Wheaton in the semi-finals of the CCIW Automatic Qualifier tournament at the end of April.  Augustana finished the season with an overall mark of 10-12, grabbing victories over Adrian, Loras, and Midwest Conference champion and NCAA Division III postseason qualifier Grinnell.

Jenna Richardson (Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) turned in an impressive year in her freshman season, finishing with a team best singles mark of 18-10.  She played the first few matches at the sixth spot, but quickly moved up to the third position after some solid wins early in the season.  Richardson finished third in the number three singles flight at the CCIW Championships and runner-up in the second singles flight at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater Invitational.  Richardson was 8-2 in her last ten matches of the fall.  She was 6-5 in doubles, including a 6-4 mark with sophomore Alli Bernardi (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.).  Richardson and Bernardi finished third in the number three doubles flight at the CCIW Championships, defeating Illinois Wesleyan’s Sandy Tobik and Harley Culbertson (8-4).  In the spring, she teamed with Kaitlin Kulovitz (Lincoln Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.) at the second spot where the duo put together a 5-4 mark.

Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and Holly Hiatt (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) led the Vikings in doubles with a 12-7 record.  The freshmen duo started the season at third doubles, but played most of the fall in the second position.  Doemland and Hiatt finished third at the CCIW Championships in the number two doubles flight with an (8-3) victory over Sarah Rusch and Cate Hunter of Illinois Wesleyan in the third place match.  They finished the fall season strong, going 9-1 in the last ten matches, which included a seven match winning streak.  Doemland finished the season with a 9-15 mark in singles, competing mostly at the number five position.  She teamed with Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS, Decorah, Iowa) at number one doubles in the spring.  They finished with a 2-7 record against some stiff competition.

Crawford was second for the Vikings in singles with eleven wins during the season.  Crawford stepped into the second singles position as a freshman and played well, finishing with a record 10-13.  She also played in the top spot for three matches over the Spring break trip, finishing 1-2.  Crawford teamed with senior co-captain Megan DeShon (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) for a 6-11 record at number one doubles in the fall.  DeShon, playing at the top of the singles and doubles lineup for the second year in a row, was 4-17 at the first singles position.  She finished the fall with a positive showing at the CCIW Championships, upsetting fourth-seeded Jeanne Mollner of Elmhurst (8-5) to take fourth place in the number one singles flight.  DeShon was also named to the CCIW All-Conference team as a second team selection.

Kulovitz worked her way into the varsity lineup in mid-season and put together a solid freshman campaign with a record of 10-11, primarily at number six singles.  Kulovitz was 3-0 against CCIW competition in the regular season.  She was 2-0 at number three doubles in the fall, teaming with freshman Klaudia Kulpa (Algonquin HS, Lake in the Hills, Ill.) for a win over Millikin and with senior co-captain Kelsi Walters (Champaign Centennial HS, Champaign, Illinois)  in a victory over North Central.  Walters was 5-10 on the year in singles, playing mostly at the fourth spot.  She was 2-7 in doubles action, playing primarily second doubles with Alli Bernardi in the first half of the season.

Bernardi finished the season with a 4-3 mark in singles.  She was 2-0 at both fifth and sixth singles, with all three defeats coming in the fourth position.  Freshman Rose Szczurek (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) was 3-6 playing at the third and fourth positions.

Augustana finishes the year with an overall record of 66-92 in singles and 38-44 in doubles.  The team was 54-76 in singles in dual meets with a 16-18 record against CCIW opponents.  DeShon and Hiatt led in singles matches against Millikin, but were unable to finish due to rain.  The Vikings finished 32-34 in doubles in dual matches and was 11-7 in CCIW meets.
