2008-09 Season - 2004-05 WOMEN'S TENNIS REVIEW
Vikings place fourth in CCIW tournament to round out fall season; Allison McAndrews and Megan DeShon both take third while Kristy Pence, Gabrielle Ray, Andrea Johnson and Kelsi Walters all finish fourth in singles action; Pence/McAndrews are third and Faith Leaich/DeShon are fourth in doubles
Spearheaded by a pair of third place performances in singles and a third place in number one doubles, the Augustana College women’s tennis team placed fourth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship. The Vikings scored 31 points in the meet, which was held at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Illinois on Friday, October 8 and Saturday, October 9. Carthage won the team title with 68 points while Wheaton was second with 59 and Illinois Wesleyan took third with 47. Trailing Augustana were North Central (9), Millikin (6) and Elmhurst (5). North Park did not field a team.
Allison McAndrews (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, IA) and Megan DeShon (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, IA) turned in the top individual performances for head coach Pat Marsh’s team. McAndrews took third at number two singles while DeShon was third at number four singles. McAndrews then teamed with Kristy Pence (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, IL) to take third at number one doubles.
Pence was fourth at number one singles, Gabrielle Ray (Marian Central Catholic HS, Woodstock, IL) ended up fourth at number three, Andrea Johnson (Waubonsie Valley HS, Aurora, IL) was fourth at number five and Kelsi Walters (Champaign Centennial HS, Champaign, IL) took fourth at number six. The number three doubles team of Faith Leaich (Belvidere HS, Belvidere, IL) and DeShon placed fourth.
McAndrews, who ended the year with a 13-7 record, started her tournament with a 6-2; 6-3 win over Kelly Hatch of North Central. She then was defeated 6-4; 6-2 by second seeded Deb Bartell of Illinois Wesleyan. In the consolation bracket she beat Laura Podeski of Millikin 8-3 and then took fourth seeded Meredith Masoncup of Wheaton in the third place match by a count of 8-5.
DeShon defeated Liz Lauer of Elmhurst 6-0; 6-1 in the first round at number four before falling in the semi-finals to number one seeded Alex Jackson of Carthage 6-0; 6-1. She bounced back nicely to beat Megan Whisler of North Central 8-1 and won third place with a 9-7 victory over third seeded Kristina Sawyer of Illinois Wesleyan. DeShon finished the year with an 11-9 overall record.
Pence defeated Katie Gregory of Elmhurst 6-0; 6-1 in the quarterfinals before running into number one seed and eventual champion Elizabeth MacIellan of Wheaton in the semi-finals. Pence lost that match 6-1; 6-1 but came back to beat Alisa Hodges of Millikin 8-3. However, in the third place match Pence fell to third seeded Lindsay Irwin of Illinois Wesleyan 8-2. Pence was 13-7 on the season.
Ray had a bye in the first round at number three and then was defeated 6-1; 6-1 by number one seed Amanda Sta. Romana of Carthage in the semi-finals. She beat Jamie Coley of Elmhurst 8-0 in the playback bracket before falling 8-0 to second seeded Brooke Parrish of Wheaton in the third place match. Ray finished her campaign at 7-10.
Johnson beat Sara Fehrenbacher of Elmhurst 6-0; 6-1 in the opening round at fifth singles before falling 6-1; 6-2 to number one seed Sarah Rusch of Illinios Wesleyan in the semifinals. Johnson took the measure of Cheryl Elliot of Millikin by a score of 8-0 in the consolation semi-finals but fell to third seeded Erika Lambros of Carthage 8-3 in the third place match. She was 9-11 this past year.
Walters opened play with a 6-0; 6-0 win over Emily Ellis of North Central before dropping a 6-4; 6-4 decision to second seeded Stephanie Coulis of Carthage in the semifinals at number six. She beat Alyse Dawid of Elmhurst 8-2 to reach the third place match where she fell 8-1 to Jane Szafraniec of Illinois Wesleyan. Her year ended with a fine 9-4 record.
In doubles play McAndrews and Pence started things off at number one with a 6-1; 6—0 win over Hodges and Podeski of Millikin. They lost 6-3; 6-0 to Mikkila and Buys of Carthage in the semifinals but responded nicely to defeat the North Central team of Hoffman and Weber 8-0 in the playbacks. For the third place match McAndrews and Pence beat Irwin and Bartell 8-6 to capture third. McAndrews and Pence finished the year 17-5 overall.
Leaich and DeShon beat Dawid and Leninger of Elmhurst 6-2; 6-0 to start things off at number three doubles before falling 6-3; 6-0 to Moberg and Myre of Wheaton in the semifinals. After beating Whisler and Nguyen of North Central 8-1 in the consolation, Leaich and DeShon fell 8-6 to Colberson and Szafraniec of Illinois Wesleyan to end up fourth. Leaich and DeShon were 6-4 this year.
The Vikings ended the year with an 8-9 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the CCIW. Pence moved into a tie for fourth place on the school’s career victory list with a record of 70-18. She is currently tied with Moira Kinnally who was 70-48 from 1992-96. Pence and McAndrews are in a tie for 10th place on the single season victory list for doubles with their 17-5 mark.
