Vikings drop overtime thriller

Prior to dropping an 80-79 overtime thriller to America De Sap Jose Do Rip Preto on Wednesday night in Rio Clara, Brazil, the Augustana men's basketball team conducted a clinic at the Scola Divinito Salvador School. RIO CLARO, Brazil - Facing the America De Sap Jose Do Rip Preto professional team on Wednesday, August 7 in Rio Claro, Brazil, Augustana dropped a tough overtime decision by a score of 80-79. The hosts trotted out a front-line that went 7' 1", 6' 10" and 6' 9" and enjoyed a 43-20 advantage in free throw attempts.

Veteran head coach Grey Giovanine's Vikings held a 36-34 advantage at halftime and the game was tied 71-71 at the end of regulation. A shot at the buzzer by junior Danielius Jurgutis (Downers Grove South HS, Darien, Ill.) that would have given Augustana the victory rimmed out.

Jurgutis led the Vikings in scoring with 15 points while sophomore Hunter Hill (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) scored 13. Junior Kevin Schlitter (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) contributed 11 points and five rebounds as he continues to make progress after sitting out most of 2012-13 with a knee injury.

The taller front line of the hosts forced Augustana to lose the rebounding battle by three. Another factor was an injury to Viking Nic Hoepfner (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.), who left the game for about four minutes with a cut above his eye that required stitches.
