2012-13 WOMEN'S GOLF SPRING REVIEW
|Megan Vandersee led the Vikings in low-stroke average in 2012-13 with a mark of 87.4 in 19 rounds. She was the team's Most Valuable Player and finished ninth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.|
Vikings third at CCIW Championships; best finish since 2006; Megan Vandersee ninth individually; Tom Lawrence named head coach for 2013-14
The Augustana women's golf team completed the fall portion of its season by moving past North Central in the final round to finish in third place at the 2012 CCIW Championships. The Vikings' performance was their best at the conference meet since a second-place finish in 2006. In addition, junior Megan Vandersee (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) finished ninth individually - the first top-ten finish for a Viking since Rachel Gahn took eighth in 2008.
Augustana won its only dual meet against St. Ambrose and also captured the nine-team Benedictine Invitational. The Vikings had second-place finishes at the 13-team Monmouth Fighting Scot Invitational and the nine-team Mt. Mercy Mustang Fall Classic and completed the fall with an overall record of 47-20.
In the spring, the team competed in four events and won the four-team Prairie Fire Spring Invitational hosted by Knox.
Tom Lawrence, a 1984 Augustana graduate, was named Augustana's new head coach following the season. Lawrence will take over for interim Head Coach Pam Tyska, who guided the Vikings during the spring portion of this year's schedule.
Vandersee led the way with eight top-ten finishes, including winning individual medalist honors at the Mustang Fall Classic (84-84 - 168) and Prairie Fire Spring Invitational (83). She averaged a team-best 87.4 strokes over 19 rounds in 12 events. She also recorded the team's lowest round with a 78 on the first day of the Maryville Spring Invitational.
Senior Morgan Wilkinson (Westmont HS, Westmont, Ill.) was the only Viking to play in all nine fall events, finishing second on the team with an average of 89.1 strokes over 14 rounds. She recorded three top-ten finishes, including a second-place 82 in the St. Ambrose dual. That represented her lowest round of the fall as well. She tied for 17th at the CCIW Championships.
Junior Jamie Lawrence (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was the individual medalist at the St. Ambrose dual, recording her low round of 81. She finished third on the team with an average of 90.5 strokes over 14 rounds in nine events. She recorded a two more top-ten finishes with a fourth-place (88) at the Augie Invite and a ninth-place 177 (89-88) at the Mustang Fall Classic. She finished in a tie for 13th at the conference meet.
Junior Kelly Farina (Normal West HS, Bloomington, Ill.) recorded top-ten finishes in five of the nine events in which she competed. She was fourth on the team with an average of 91.8 strokes over 12 rounds. Her lowest round was an 83 at the Grinnell Invitational, which tied for seventh place. Her highest finish of the season came at the Fighting Scots Invitational, where she was second with a round of 90.
Junior Dena Capitani (Hinsdale Central HS, Hinsdale, Ill.) averaged 92.8 strokes over 14 rounds in nine events. Her best round was an 83 in the first round of the Benedictine Invitational. Her highest finish was a tie for seventh (96) at the Prairie Fire Spring Invitational. She finished 22nd at the CCIW Championships.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Czerwonka (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) played only five rounds in four events, but was sixth on the team with a per-round average of 93.4 strokes. Her best two rounds came at the Benedictine Invitational, her final event of the year. She shot an 89 in the opening round and bettered that with an 87 on the second day.
Freshman Samantha Barlage (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.) played 16 rounds in 11 events. She averaged 94.1 strokes and recorded four top-ten finishes. Her best round and top finish came at Monmouth's Fighting Scot Invitational, when she shot an 84 to tie for third. She finished 33rd at the conference meet.
Freshman Michelle Dempster (Mother McAuley HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) averaged 94.2 strokes over 12 rounds in eight events. Her tie for sixth-place at the Benedictine Invitational helped the Vikings to the team title and she shot her best round of the season with an 81 in the opening round. She was 37th at the CCIW meet.
Freshman Caitlin Doherty (Westmont HS, Westmont, Ill.) averaged 97.0 strokes in 10 events and 13 rounds. Her best round was a 90 at the Grinnell College Invitational and she finished in a tie for ninth at the Fighting Scots Invitational (99).
Junior Kelly Olson (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) averaged 97.5 strokes over 15 rounds in 11 events. Her low round of 85 came at the Augustana Fall Classic, which tied her for sixth place.
