Augustana's new stadium to offer local beer, pizza
May 30, 2013
Augustana’s location in the Quad Cities is a distinction, and soon the college will celebrate its local connections through food and beverage. The college recently announced it will partner with two locally owned businesses – Harris Pizza and Bent River Brewing Company – to offer concessions at the new Austin E. Knowlton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
“Anyone who has attended a professional sporting event in the last decade knows it’s hard to gauge whether some fans come for the food or the game,” said Garry Griffith, director of food service. “College venues, like the new stadium complex being built at Augustana, are capitalizing on that trend.”
New facilities in the Knowlton Complex will include the Charles D. Lindberg Stadium and the Ken Anderson Academic All-America Club. All facilities are scheduled to open on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 6 p.m., when the Vikings host their first football game in the complex. That night Augustana will play College of Mount Saint Joseph, from Cincinnati.
Attendees will be able to get locally produced concessions inside the Ken Anderson Academic All-America Club. The club will be an indoor gathering location with televisions, room to socialize and picture-window views of the game-day action. This building will feature Viking football memorabilia and a display of Academic All-Americans. Augustana has had 142 Academic All-Americans throughout the years and ranks sixth in the nation in number produced, regardless of division.
“Harris Pizza was a natural partner for us,” said Griffith, who explained many alumni come back to the Quad-Cities area to visit campus and eat Harris Pizza. “Now we will be making it even easier for them.”
Harris’ famous sausage pizza, along with pepperoni, cheese and possibly other varieties, will be available by the slice.
“Augustana has been around for a long time, and Harris is a staple in the community,” said Ryan Mosley, general manager for Harris Pizza. “The partnership just makes sense.”
According to Steve Cogdill, general manager at Bent River, Moline, this is a “great partnership.” He noted that four varieties of beer will be served: the Uncommon Stout, Mississippi Blonde, Pale Ale and a fruit ale. The beer will be served only in the clubhouse, to those who have shown proper I.D. and obtained a wristband.
Lindberg Stadium and the Anderson Academic All-America Club link a pair of prominent Augustana alumni who enjoyed national success as undergraduates that served as springboards to professional acclaim in Cincinnati. Charlie Lindberg ’50 was a star orator on campus and went on to a career as a lawyer, and Ken Anderson ’74 was the college’s first Academic All-American, who played quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Harris Pizza is a 50-year-old Quad Cities-based business with four locations. Harris Pizza is known as the “The Original Quad City Style Pizza™.”
Bent River Brewing Company opened in 1997 in Moline and now produces 10,000 barrels of beer annually. With locations in both Rock Island and Moline, Bent River is known for handcrafted beers.
The addition of Harris Pizza and Bent River beer on campus follows a long tradition of offering Moline-based Whitey’s Ice Cream.
