Behnke hit keys win over Carthage

Sophomore Laura Behnke delivered a clutch two-out RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning to help lift Augustana to a 2-1 victory over Carthage in the second round of the CCIW Tournament on Friday, May 3 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

KENOSHA, Wis. -- Laura Behnke's (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) two-out double in the bottom of the fifth scored Kendra Rakers (Belleville West HS, Millstadt, Ill.) with the eventual winning run Friday as Augustana knocked off top-seeded Carthage 2-1 in the second round of the CCIW Tournament. The Vikings improve to 28-12 and will play Saturday at noon against the winner of Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage.

Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) led off the fifth by drawing a walk from Lady Red ace Krystina Leazer. Rakers ran for her and moved to second on Christina Pagan's (Normal West HS, Normal, Ill.) sacrifice bunt. One out later, Behnke plated Rakers with a double to left center.

Augustana starter Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS, Le Roy, Ill.) started fast, fanning six of the first eight batters she faced. After striking out the first two Lady Reds in the third, she issued a walk to Jen Precht. Bryanna Heckel and Corinne Sheley followed with back-to-back singles, scoring Precht for a 1-0 Carthage lead.

In the bottom of the third, Behnke got her first two-out double of the game and Chelsea Lavin's (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) single up the middle plated her with the tying run.

Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) came out of the Viking pen to start the sixth. The Lady Reds loaded the bases against her with one out, but she worked her way out of it and retired Carthage in the seventh as well to earn her second save of the season.

Hintz improved to 12-6 with the win. She allowed a run on three hits and two walks in five innings. She finished with eight strikeouts.
