Jacob Benner's discus win highlights Loras Open

Jacob Benner's winning discus throw of 142' 2" highlighted Augustana's performance Saturday at the Loras Open.

DUBUQUE, Iowa-Sophomore Jacob Benner (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) highlighted Augustana's performance at the Loras Open Saturday. Benner claimed the Vikings' lone event win with a heave of 142' 2" in the discus. No team scores were compiled.

Senior Kevin Macek (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) finished second in the shot with an Augustana season-best mark of 50' 5¼", third in the hammer with a throw of 150' 1" and sixth behind Benner in the discus, with a toss of 136' 1".  

The Vikings also got second-place finishes from sophomore Kyle Bennett (Davenport West HS, Davenport, Iowa) in the 400 hurdles and senior Tommy Harris (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) in the 3000 steeplechase. Bennett finished in :54.90, while freshman teammate Travis Goodwin (Simi Valley HS, Simi Valley, Calif.) was eighth in :57.73. Harris' steeplechase time of 9:43.86 was a Viking season best. Juniors Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) and Alex Stockwell (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, behind Harris with times of 9:58.86 and 10:03.03.  

In the 400, senior Dan Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) posted a third-place :49.84 and sophomore Rob McNeil (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Normal, Ill.) was sixth in :50.64. Sophomore Alex Odenkirk (Ironwood Ridge HS, Tucson, Ariz.) also brought home a third-place finish with a 4:01.97 in the 1500. Senior Dennis O'Flaherty (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was right behind Odenkirk with a fourth-place 4:02.81 and sophomore Nick Gornick (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was sixth in 4:06.44.  

The Viking 4x400 relay team of Bennett, freshman Dan Popek (Minooka HS, Minooks, Ill.), junior Jared Spivey (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.) and Doubet ran a third-place 3:23.15.  

Senior Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) went 21' 2¾" in the long jump, good for fourth place. Sophomore Jeff Padesky (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was also fourth in the pole vault. He cleared 14' 3¼". Freshman teammates Bennett Hartman (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and Rick Funk (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.) tied for ninth with marks of 13' 3½".  

Junior Justin Davidson (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) and Alec Seymour (Riverton HS, Riverton, Ill.) finished sixth in the high jump and javelin, respectively. Davidson went 6' ¾" and Seymour threw 153' 2".  

Other top ten finishes for the Vikings included sophomore Kevin Gordy's (Lincoln-Way West HS, Mokena, Ill.) eighth-place 38' 5 ½" in the triple jump and freshman Garrett Miner's (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) ninth-place :22.90 in the 200. In the 800, sophomore Keegan Buttimer (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) finished ninth in 1:59.43 and Odenkirk was tenth in 1:59.55.  

Coach Paul Olsen's Vikings will be competing at the CCIW Championships in Decatur, Illinois on Friday and Saturday, May 3 & 4.
