Augustana splits at 25th-ranked North Central

Sophomore Jenna Teson went 4-for-6 with four runs scored Saturday as Augustana earned a doubleheader split at 25th-ranked North Central. The Vikings dropped the opener 6-2, but bounced back to take the nightcap 5-1.

NAPERVILLE, Ill.-Sophomore Laura Behnke (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) homered and freshman pitcher Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) went five solid innings as Augustana bounced back from a 6-2 game one setback, winning 5-1 in the nightcap to earn a doubleheader split at 25th-ranked North Central Saturday. Augustana is now 24-12 overall and 7-7 in the CCIW, while the Cardinals are 31-5 on the year and 7-5 in the league.

Game One - North Central 6, Augustana 2

North Central's Vlasta Mengia scattered eight Viking hits in the opener to pick up her 21st win against just three losses this year.

The Cardinals staked Mengia to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Only one of the runs off Viking starter Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS, Le Roy, Ill.) was earned. Augustana cut the lead in half in the top of the third when Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) singled in Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.), but the Viking left two runners stranded in the inning.

Teson singled and scored again to tie it 2-2 in the fifth. Jamie Rehmert's (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) single to center drove her in, but Augustana again left two runners on. The tie was short-lived however, as North Central scored three in the bottom of the frame. Carly Trenhaile's two-run single was the big hit.

The Cardinals added a run off Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS Morrison, Ill.) in the sixth to account for the final.

Lavin had three hits and Teson a pair. Hintz suffered the loss, falling to 10-6 this year.

Game Two - Augustana 5, North Central 1

North Central got their only run off Anderson in the top of the first in the nightcap. Mangia singled in Kiersten Tinkoff, but Augustana's freshman southpaw left a pair of Cardinals stranded in the frame. The Vikings, designated the home team for the second game, came right back to tie it on Rehmert's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the inning.

Augustana added three in the second. Freshman Cheyenne Burnett (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.) knocked in the go-ahead run with an infield grounder and Behnke followed with a two-run homer to right, her seventh of the year, tying her for the team lead with Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill).

Anderson worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth before giving way to Wiersema, who finished up the final two innings for her second save of the year.

The Vikings manufactured one final run in the bottom of the sixth. Teson led off with an infield hit, moved to second on Anderson's sacrifice bunt and came around to score on Burnett's groundout and a North Central throwing error.

Anderson moved to 8-4 with the win. Teson went two for three with two runs scored for the second straight game. Behnke was two for four with a pair driven in.

Augustana wraps up regular season play when it hosts a doubleheader with Knox on Sunday, April 28 at 1:00 p.m.
