Augustana senior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) has been selected as the "Athlete of the Week" for men's track & field in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. Rindone took down a 33 year old school record at the Meet of Champions on Saturday, April 20 at Paul V. Olsen Track.
Rindone won two individual events en route to leading Augustana to the team title with 201.50 points but it was his performance in the 400 that opened the most eyes. He ripped off a time of :47.76, taking down the 33-year old school record of :47.84 set by Mike Meyer in 1980. The time of :47.76 is also the third fastest time in NCAA Division III this season.
He also won the 200 in :21.74 and anchored the 400 relay to a second place finish of :41.48. So far this season Rindone has the team's fastest time in the 100 (:10.84 on March 23 at Viking Olympics), 200 (:21.74 at Meet of Champions) and 400 (:47.76 at Meet of Champions). He has also been the anchor on the 400 relay team that clocked :41.28 on March 28 at the Easter Open and the 1600 relay which blazed to a scintillating 3:12.82 on April 13 at the Lee Calhoun Memorial in Macomb, Illinois.
This past winter Rindone finished second in the open 400 at the NCAA Division III indoor national championship and was a member of the Vikings' All-American 1600 relay team. He also won the 200 at the CCIW indoor championship in 2013 and anchored the 1600 relay team to victory.
A year ago Rindone set school records in 60 (06:95), 200 (:21.97), and 300 (:35.07) during the indoor season. He was also the champion in the 200 at the CCIW indoor conference championship meet last February. During the outdoor season Rindone was just as impressive, taking the individual title in the 200 at the CCIW outdoor meet, as well as being a part of the winning 400 meter and 1600 meter relay teams. He set a new school record in the 200 (:21.17) in addition to being a member of the school record setting 400 meter relay (:40.88) and 1600 meter relay (3:10.70). All three of these school records were set in Claremont, California at the NCAA Division III National Meet and all three of those times earned Rindone All-American honors.
Rindone now owns 16 CCIW individual or relay titles in his career, six indoor and 10 outdoor.
A business administration and communications major, Rindone is the son of Paul & Jill Rindone of Geneva, Illinois.
