Viking sweep of IWU tightens CCIW race
|Junior right fielder Jacob Van Duyne had five hits and drove in four runs Saturday as Augustana swept Illinois Wesleyan 10-5 and 4-3 (10) at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.|
MOLINE, Ill.-Junior Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) capped a big day by scoring the winning run in the 10th inning of Saturday's doubleheader nightcap as Augustana swept CCIW-leading Illinois Wesleyan 10-5 and 4-3 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The 22nd-ranked Vikings improve to 23-5 on the year and 10-3 in the league. The 21st-rated Titans fall to 22-7 overall and 12-2 in the conference.
Game One - Augustana 10, Illinois Wesleyan 5
Augustana rebounded from a 3-0 deficit in the opener, getting four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead. The Vikings added a pair in the fourth and four more in the fifth and rode the relief pitching of freshman Darwin Townsend (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) to the win, handing IWU its first CCIW setback of 2013.
After the Titans touched starter Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) for two runs in the second and one in the third, Van Duyne's two-run double to right got Augustana on the board in the bottom of the third. Senior Grant Stewart's (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) sacrifice fly to left plated Van Duyne with the tying run and sophomore Jacques Camalick (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) gave the hosts the lead with an RBI single to right center.
The Titans tied it in the top of the fourth, but Van Duyne's RBI single in the bottom of the frame regained the lead for Augustana. The Vikings added a run when sophomore Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) scored on an errant throw by the Titans attempting to double Van Duyne off first on Danny Fifer's (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) liner to short.
The hosts extended the lead to 10-4 with four in the fifth. Lenihan's two-run single was the big hit in the inning.
Townsend (2-0) took it from there, finishing up after spelling McIntosh to start the fifth. He allowed only an unearned run in the ninth and picked up his second win of the week. Van Duyne had three hits and three RBI, while Lenihan had three hits and drove in two runs. Sophomore catcher Nick Tenerelli (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) scored three runs.
Game Two - Augustana 4, Illinois Wesleyan 3 (10 innings)
After leading off the bottom of the tenth of game two with an infield hit, Van Duyne moved to second on a wild pitch. Fifer followed with a bouncing ball up the middle which the Titans couldn't handle, allowing Van Duyne to race home with the game-winner.
Illinois Wesleyan again jumped out in front, getting a pair of runs off Seth Davis (Mullen HS, Aurora, Colo.) in the second, but Augustana tied it with two in the bottom of the third. Van Duyne drove in the club's first run with a single to center and Kurt Schmidt's (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) sacrifice fly to center scored Tenerelli with the tying run.
Singles by Camalick, Tenerelli and Lenihan produced the go-ahead run in the Viking fourth.
Meanwhile Davis found a groove, shutting down the Titans until the eighth with the help of several fine defensive plays, especially by Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) at short and Schmidt at second. It looked as though he might get out of the eight unscathed as well when Schmidt cut down IWU's Kevin Callahan at the plate on an infield grounder. However, Titan Derek Idstein followed with a game-tying single. Lenihan then turned a nifty 5-3 double play to get the Vikings out of further trouble.
Senior Rick Erickson (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) came on for Davis after he walked the first batter in the ninth. Coach Greg Wallace's lefty closer threw two scoreless innings to get the win and move to 4-0 on the year. Titan John Munyon suffered his first loss of the season after six wins. Davis allowed nine hits and three runs in eight innings, walking one and fanning seven. Van Duyne, Tenerelli and Camalick each had two of the Vikings' 10 hits.
The teams wrap up the three-game set on Sunday, April 21 in Bloomington, Illinois. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
