Krista Watson slugs way to CCIW honor
|Junior Krista Watson hit .545 and had a 1.273 slugging percentage to help lead Augustana to victories in three of four conference games last weekend on the road. She was named "Hitter of the Week" in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin for her efforts.|
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Augustana junior shortstop Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) got hot at the right time and helped lead the Vikings to three wins in a crucial four-game road trip to open the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin softball season last week. As a result, Watson was named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) "Hitter of the Week".
She batted .545 with six hits in 11 at-bats) with four runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, five runs-batted-in and a 1.273 slugging percentage as the Vikings swept third ranked Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, April 6 by scores of 5-3 and 6-5 and split with Millikin (2-3 and 6-1) on Sunday, April 7.
In the sweep of the Titans on Saturday she went a combined three for five with two runs scored, two RBI, a double and a home run. In the split at Millikin on Sunday she went three for six with two runs scored, three RBI and a home run.
Watson, a two-time all-CCIW and all-region selection, is currently batting .284 with 21 hits, 14 runs scored, three doubles, four home runs and 15 runs-batted-in. Augustana is currently 18-6 overall and 3-1 in the CCIW and the Vikings have won 10 of their last 12 games. The Vikings will host North Park this Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m. and Carthage at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 14.
Watson, a biology major, is the third Augustana player this season to win CCIW "Player of the Week" honors. Junior Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) was the "Pitcher of the Week" on March 5 and sophomore outfielder Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) was the "Hitter of the Week" on March 5 and again on April 2.
