Vikings win three events and finish second at CCIW Championships; set four school records; finish 14th at nationals; ranked ninth in nation in dual meet power rankings; Rindone second in the nation at 400 meters; four Vikings win All-America honors in three events
Led by six All-America performances by four Vikings, coach Paul Olsen's Augustana track & field squad finished the 2013 indoor season with a 14th-place tie at the NCAA Division III Championships. The Vikings finished second at the CCIW meet and were also ranked ninth in the nation in the final U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association dual meet power rankings. Along the way, four school records fell.
Senior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) came within one one-hundredth of a second of a national championship in the 400 meters at this year's NCAA Division III Championships in Naperville, Illinois. His school-record :48.21 earned him second place and All-America honors. Senior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) joined him as a 400-meter All-American, finishing eighth in :50.48.
The senior duo teamed with sophomores Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) and David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) to finish eighth in the 4x400, earning All-America status as well with a time of 3:18.06.
Rindone's 400 time in the national finals bettered his own school record of :48.46, set in the preliminaries a day earlier. He also broke his own school record in the 300 by a half second, with a :34.57 at the Midwest Invitational at Monmouth, Illinois on January 19. At the Stevens Point Qualifier on March 2, Patton, Rindone, Cline and Voland set a new Augustana standard with a 3:16.88 in the 4x400 relay - the best 2013 time in the nation at the time. Senior heptathlete Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) set a new school mark as well, compiling 4,624 points at the CCIW Championships.
Patton (400 meters) and Rindone (200) also won individual CCIW championships and joined Cline and Voland on the CCIW-winning 4x400 relay. The Vikings opened the indoor season by winning the five-team Sol Butler Invitational at Dubuque University. Individual winners included Patton in the 400, seniors Dennis O'Flaherty (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) in the 1000 and Colton VanKirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) in the pole vault, freshman Keith Sands (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) in the mile and the 4x800 relay of sophomore Nick Gornick (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), junior Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.), senior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) and O'Flaherty.
Augustana won 10 events at Monmouth's Midwest Invitational, although no team scores were compiled. In addition to Rindone's school-record performance in the 300, junior Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) (600), Valle (800), Sands (3000), Voland (60 hurdles), junior Justin Davidson (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) (high jump) and senior Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) (long jump) were individual winners. The 4x200, 4x400 and distance medley relays also picked up wins. At the Olivet Nazarene Invitational, the Vikings tied the hosts for the title behind wins from Rindone (200), Patton (400), Voland (60 hurdles) and Gale (heptathlon) as well as the 4x400 relay team of Patton, sophomore Kyle Bennett (Davenport West HS, Davenport, Iowa), Voland and Rindone.
Rindone (200) and the 4x400 relay won at UW-Whitewater's Converse Invitational, where the Vikings were fifth among nine teams.
Augustana won Grinnell's 10-team Darren Young Classic with VanKirk (pole vault) joining Rindone (400) and the 4x400 relay team as winners.
Olsen's crew headed into the CCIW meet off a win at the five-team Augustana Invitational. Winners at the Pepsico Center included senior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) in the 3000, as well as Sands (mile), Rindone (55), Madison (800), Gornick (1000) and Voland (300).
