Occidental offense too much for Vikings

Nattali Shelton scored her first goal of the season on Saturday in Augustana's 16-4 loss at Occidental.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Augustana had no answer for Occidental's offensive attack in the second half and fell 16-4 on Saturday, February 23 in Los Angeles, California. It was the second straight loss for the Vikings, who dropped their season opener to Redlands by a score of 18-6 on Thursday, February 21.

The Vikings got off to a good start with freshman Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) scoring a pair of goals less than 30 second apart to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. She got her first goal off a free position shot at 19:59 of the first half and second one was unassisted at 19:30.

Occidental answered with goals at 16:47 and 14:31 before sophomore Christina Letmanski (Glenbard West HS, Wheaton, Ill.) scored unassisted at 13:17 to put Augustana on top 3-2. The Tigers then ripped off five straight goals to take a  7-3 lead at halftime. Occident scored in the first 20 seconds of the second half to make it an 8-3 game but sophomore Nattali Shelton (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) answered with a goal off an assist from sophomore Kate Zisser (Kirkwood HS, St. Louis, Mo.) at 27:55 to trim the lead to 8-4.

That was all the scoring for the Vikings as Occidental tallied the game's final eight goals. Rebecca Beldin led the Tigers in scoring with four goals.

Augustana was on the short-end of 38-14 shot total and lost the ground ball statistic 29-19. Zisser and sophomore Anna Kyllo (St. Croix Lutheran HS, Bloomington, Minn.) each had three ground balls for the Vikings.

Augustana's next game will be February 25 against Whittier in Whittier, California.
