Jones named CCIW "Athlete of the Week"
|Senior Sarahbeth Jones has been named the "Athlete of the Week" for women's track & field in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. Jones set a new school record in the 3000 and was part of the 3200 meter relay that also set a new school record at the Olivet Nazarene Invitational in Bourbonnais, Illinois this past weekend.|
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Senior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) has been named the "Athlete of the Week" for women's track & field in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. Jones was honored after her performance at the Olivet Nazarene Invitational in Bourbonnais, Illinois on Saturday, January 26.
Jones set a new school record in the 3000 in route to victory in the event. Her time of 10:14.66 betters the previous school record of 10:15.27 set by former Viking All-American Susan Paige in 1999. Jones also anchored the 3200 meter relay team to a victory. The relay set a new school record with a time of 9:31.21, beating the old record of 9:38.13 set in 1998.
Jones began the 2013 indoor season by winning the 3000 at the Sol Butler Invitational in Dubuque, Iowa on Saturday, January 12 with a time of 10:25.65. At the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois on Saturday, January 19, Jones won the mile in a time of 5:12.04 and finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:24.76.
A year ago during the indoor season, Jones won the 3000 at the CCIW Indoor Championships. She was also a member of the CCIW champion distance medley relay that set a new school record with a time of 12:13.73. During the outdoor season, Jones took home the CCIW title in the 5000. She also broke two individual school records (3000 & 5000) in addition to being part of two school record setting relays (distance medley & 6400). Her school record setting time of 16:53.57 in the 5000 qualified her for a trip to Claremont, California to compete in the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships. She placed ninth in the event, just missing out on earning All-American honors.
