Scholten and Schraidt win titles at Central Invitational

PELLA, Iowa - Showing nice depth and balance from top to bottom, the 17th ranked Augustana wrestling team crowned two individual weight class champions and had 12 top-four place-winners at the Central of Iowa Invitational on Saturday, January 12 in Pella, Iowa. There were no team scores kept in the tournament but head coach Eric Juergens' team put on a pretty good show.
Junior Jacob Scholten (Rockford HS, Grandville, Mich.) and sophomore John Schraidt (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) provided bookend championship performances for the Vikings. Scholten won the lightest weight class (125) and Schraidt took the heaviest (285).
Scholten won all three of his matches and took the title with a 7-1 victory over Jake Agnitsch of Wartburg. Scholten is now 26-3 on the season. Schraidt finished the tournament 4-0 after beating Zack Gibson of St. Olaf 3-1 in the championship bout. He is now 21-6 this year.
The Vikings had four runner-up performances on the afternoon. Freshman Cody Weitzel (Valor Christian HS, Englewood, Colo.) at 133, sophomore Connor Cummings (Downers Grove North HS, Woodridge, Ill.) at 165, senior Matt Burns (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) at 174 and junior Jordan Richardson (Grandville HS, Wyoming, Ill.) at 184 all reached the championship match in their respective weight classes.
Weitzel was 2-1 on the day and lost to Joao Vicente of William Penn 24-5. Weitzel is now 10-9 this year. Cummings won two matches before dropping the championship match to Nate Stadeker of Grand View by a score of 6-4 and he is now 7-11 this season.
Burns is now 26-3 after falling to James Roach of St. Olaf 14-3. He won his first three matches before dropping the title round to Roach. Richardson fell to Basic Munto of North Iowa Community College by a narrow 2-1 margin and is now 24-6. He won two matches before losing to Munto.
Sophomore Hector Ruiz (East Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) placed third at 141 pounds after going 3-1 on the day. Freshman Isaiah Schaub (St. Francis HS, Traverse City, Mich.) also went 3-1 at 141 and took fourth place. Jake Meeder did things the hard way at 149, losing his first round match and then coming back to win five straight to take third place.
Sophomore Kevin Sundberg (Paw Paw HS, Paw Paw, Mich.) took third at 157 pounds and was 4-1 in the tournament. Freshman Jimmy Pannozzo (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was 4-1 at 125 pounds and finished third. Junior Abe Duran (East Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) took fourth at 285 and was 3-1 on the day.
Augustana will host North Central in a dual meet this week on January 17 in the Carver Center.
