Four straight wins at Florida Duals

Jordan Richardson won four straight matches at the Florida Duals and is now 18-4 on the season for the Vikings, who have a 7-2 dual meet record.

FT. MYERS, Florida - In the final competition prior to the Christmas break, the 19th ranked Augustana wrestling team put on an impressive showing at the Florida Duals in Ft. Myers, Florida. Head coach Eric Juergens' team won all four dual meets en route to pushing its overall record to 7-2. The Vikings beat Alma (24-12), Heidelberg (24-13), Concordia-Wisconsin (42-3) and SUNY-Oneonta (24-12) in the one day event, which was held at Riverdale High School in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Three Augustana wrestlers picked up four victories on the day. Junior Jacob Scholten (Rockford HS, Grandville, Mich.) at 125, senior Matt Burns (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) at 174 and junior Jordan Richardson (Grandville HS, Wyoming, Mich.) at 184 all finished with perfect 4-0 records.  

AUGUSTANA 24, ALMA 12 The Vikings jumped out to an early 16-0 lead thanks to victories in the first five weight classes and were never headed en route to a 24-12 victory over the Scots. Jacob Scholten (Rockford HS, Grandville, Mich.) started things off with a 6-0 win over Collin Lesko at 125 pounds.  

Freshman Cody Weitzel (Valor Christian HS, Edgewood, Colo.) handled Zac Case at 133 by a score of 6-2. Sophomore Hector Ruiz (East Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) scored a major decision (12-3) over Travis Martin at 141 pounds. Sophomore David Tessiatore (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) defeated Caleb Huff 10-7 at 149 and sophomore Kevin Sundberg (Paw Paw HS, Paw Paw, Mich.) made it five wins in a row with 5-3 victory over Shawn Brewer at 157.  

Senior Matt Burns (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) picked up a major decision (16-4) over Joshua Jenson at 174 and junior Jordan Richardson (Grandville HS, Wyoming, Mich.) also grabbed a major decision (14-2) over Jared Groeveveld.  

AUGUSTANA 24, HEIDELBERG 13 After Scholten opened up with a 6-4 win over Delian Schneider at 125 pounds, things took a turn against Augustana as Heidelberg won the next four weight classes to go up 13-3 heading into the 165 pound weight class. Sophomore Thomas Reyhons (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) came up with a pin of Justin Wharton just :57 into the 165 pound match. Burns followed with a pin of Jeremy Stepp at 1:53 of the 174 pound weight class and suddenly the Vikings were ahead 15-13.  

Richardson beat Brennan Kelly 10-6 at 184 pounds and freshman Jake Melik (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) beat Matt Shurina 6-4 at 197. Sophomore John Schraidt (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) closed out the victory with a 7-3 win over Andy Lovins at 285.  

AUGUSTANA 42, CONCORDIA-WISCONSIN 3 Using four pins, two major decisions and a technical fall, Augustana left nothing for chance in a 42-3 demolition of Concordia-Wisconsin.   Richardson at 184, Melik at 197 and Seaman at 285 closed out the match with three straight pins while Sundberg picked up the other fall at 157 pounds.  

Freshman Isaiah Schaub (St. Francis HS, Traverse City, Mich.) picked up a technical fall at 141 and freshman Jimmy Panozzo (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) at 133 and Burns at 174 rolled to major decisions. Scholten won at 125 and sophomore Alex Bowers (Noblesville HS, Noblesville, Ind.) picked up a victory at 165.  

AUGUSTANA 24, SUNY-ONEONTA 12 A pair of pins late in the match keyed the Vikings' 24-12 win over SUNY-Oneonta to close out the Florida Duals. With the score tied 9-9 after six weight classes, Burns decked Jared Usher at 2:17 of the 174 pound weight class and Richardson pinned Chad Obxud at 2:03 of the 184 pound weight class. That made the score 21-9 in favor of Augustana. After a loss at 197, the Vikings bounced back at 285 when Schraidt beat Connor Murphy 6-3.  

Scholten started things off with a win over Zachary Aal at 126 pounds for his fourth victory of the day. Schaub beat Kyle Wierzbicki 5-3 at 149 and Sundberg defeated Dan Graff 4-2 at 157.
