Men's cross country awards announced

Seniors Brian Pollastrini (7) and Jonathan Smith (8) were major award winners for the 2012 Augustana men's cross country team. Pollastrini and Smith shared the Most Inspirational Award and Smith was named the team's Most Valuable Runner.

It should come as no surprise that Augustana senior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was named as the Most Valuable Runner honors for the 2012 men's cross country team. Smith, one of three senior captains for the Vikings this past season, earned NCAA Division III All-America honors at the national meet on November 17 in Terre Haute, Indiana.

While Smith's 34th place finish with a time of 25:04.4 made him the 25th All-American in Augustana men's cross country history, his season was one of tremendous consistency. He competed in eight meets for veteran head coach Paul Olsen's team and was the number one runner each time out. In addition to becoming an All-American, Smith was also fifth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship meet with a time of 24:45 at St. James Farm in Wheaton, Illinois. He followed that with a 15th place finish at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to qualify for the national meet.

Smith was fourth in the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational on September 21 as he led his team to the championship at Saukie Golf Course. He also was fourth at the Western Illinois Invitational on August 31, seventh at the pre-National meet in Terre Haute on October 6, 14th at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championship in Normal, Illinois on September 14 and 21st at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational on October 13.

Smith also shared the Most Inspirational Award with senior teammate, and fellow captain, Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.). Pollastrini suffered an injury late in the year which hampered him but he had a fifth place finish at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational and a sixth at the Western Illinois Invitational.

The Most Valuable Freshman honor went to Keith Sands (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.). Sands was in the top five from the beginning of the season and he placed 10th at the CCIW championship. He was also eighth at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational.

Junior Aaron Trost (Bishop McNamara HS, Kankakee, Ill.) won the Most Improved Athlete for the varsity and Brian Lovejoy (Mt. Carmel HS, Chicago, Ill.) was the Most Improved Freshman.

Jonathan Smith, Pollastrini and senior Tommy Harris (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) were honored as captains for 2012. Senior-to-be Isaac Trostle (Willowbrook HS, Lombard, Ill.) and fellow classmate Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) were voted captains-elect for the 2013 campaign by their teammates.

Augustana, which won the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational and placed second at the pre-National meet and third in the CCIW, finished the season ranked 31st in the nation in NCAA Division III and eighth in the Midwest Region.
